Review – Double Life

Double Life – Spy Kids Vosburg Style!

Rating: 4 of 5 for 9-12 year old readers
Author: Dawson Vosburg

Available: Paperback, Hardcover, Kindle

Seventh grader, Josiah Jones frequently found himself imagining a world more interesting and exciting than his boring real world life as a loner at school.  In his imagination, he was a spy, a secret agent for the even more secret agency – the Blue Agency – protector of all that is good and right in the world.  Visiting this special place in his mind was a way to escape the mundane existence of everyday life until the day Josiah found a pair of sunglasses.  But these were no ordinary sunglasses.  After putting them on, Josiah finds himself pulled from his body and right back in but in a different world – his imaginary world – except now its for real.  No longer was he the loner Josiah Jones but the famous Agent 12 tasked with destroying the evil Red Agency.  Unfortunately, Josiah hasn’t the slightest idea how to actually be a secret agent even in this imaginary world.  How will he save the world?

Dawson Vosburg’s Double Life is targeted for juvenile fiction readers.  It is a creative mix of imagination, action, and escapism.  Reading this novel reminded me of a cross between the movie Spy Kids and my own children’s video games.  The action and scenes keep going and going just like a video game where the story movies along quickly from one sequence to the next.  The style and story is appealing for the target reading audience as it is exactly the type of story my kids would like.  Therefore, I’ve rated it 4 of 5 stars with this audience in mind.

I especially enjoyed the twist in the story where Josiah learns that he may not be the only person from the real world sharing his imaginary land.  This provides the opportunity for him to connect with others in the real life and learn perhaps he isn’t as alone as he may have once thought.

To complete a novel is quite an undertaking in and of itself, to do so with such creativity at such a young age should be commended.  Congratulations Dawson!

Thin Place: A Pilgrimage Home

  • Hardcover: 296 pages
  • Publisher: Columbia University Press (November 3, 2008)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0231146523
  • ISBN-13: 978-0231146524
  • Product Dimensions: 9 x 6.2 x 1 inches

Description

Thin Places is an eloquent meditation on what it means to move between cultures and how one might finally come home, a particular paradox in a culture that lacks deep ties to the natural world.
Charting Armbrecht’s travels as an anthropologist in the mountains of Nepal and the United States and her disintegrating marriage back home, Thin Places is ultimately an exploration not of the sacred far-off but of the sacredness of places between—between the internal and external landscape, between the self and other, and between the self and the land. She finds that home is not a place where you arrive but a way of being in place, wherever that place may be. Along the way Armbrecht explores the disconnections in our most intimate relationships, how they stem from the same disconnections that create our destruction of the land, and how one cannot be healed without attending to the other.

“Ann Armbrecht has written an intricate, smart, soulful story about the shape-shifting boundaries between culture and landscape; people and place. But Thin Places is much more than travel writing rooted in Nepal. It is a brave rendering of what happens when we allow our intellect to bow to our instincts and recognize love for what it is: a transformative pilgrimage requiring great courage and generosity of spirit, including forgiveness.” – Terry Tempest Williams, author of Finding Beauty in a Broken World

  • Product Dimensions: 8.9 x 6 x 0.6 inches
  • Description

    Develop Your True Inner Power!

The Kundalini is a powerful pool of energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine. For thousands of years the Awakening of the Kundalini has been enshrouded in myth and mystery.

The simple fact is that Awakening the Kundalini really isn t that hard! People do it all the time completely by accident. What can be extremely difficult is learning to deal with the changes that an Awakened Kundalini can bring about in your life.

Robert Morgen had a Kundalini Awakening during a near-death experience in 1992 and then spent the next decade on a quest to understand what had happened and how to adjust to the changes in his life.

“The kundalini can show you why you re here, what life is really all about and help unveil the mysteries surrounding our everyday lives. This book can teach you to calm your mind, improve your health and develop abilities that most people aren t even aware of” says Morgen. Using the exercises in this book, the dedicated Seeker (that’s YOU) can not only learn to tap into these hidden reserves of energy, but do so safely and efficiently.

    The topics covered include:
Meditation Basics: unlocking your inner power
    Kundalini and Enlightenment
    Developing your Self-Awareness
    Seeing and feeling energy
    Complete Self Acceptance
    Opening and Balancing the Chakras
    And much more

“Personal Mastery is an incremental process,” says Morgen. “Rather than making huge, unsustainable changes, it s all about developing your true self and becoming the person you were meant to be. No matter who or where you are, your path to your own personal mastery starts right NOW!”

During Hitler’s planning of the extermination of the Jews, he is quoted by history as saying, “After all, who speaks nowadays of the massacre of the Armenians?” Vahan Gregory’s Sing the Long Sorrow penetrates the events of this historic nightmare, and tells a moving tale of perpetrator and victim.

But Zyra’s vendetta with Zaragos leads her on a forlorn crusade that puts her at odds with not only the law, but also her own religious principles.

While hunting a notorious fugitive on the distant side of the galaxy, Zyra stumbles onto a conspiracy by Zaragos to murder the senators of the Intergalactic Alliance. Zyra learns that this plot is just the tip of the iceberg, for there is a clandestine force operating behind Zaragos that seeks to destroy not only the Intergalactic Alliance, but mankind as well. Zyra will have to put aside her selfish quest of revenge if she is to uncover the mastermind behind this plot and save humanity from an impending holocaust.

Zyra must come to terms with the violent role she plays in trying to keep peace in the galaxy, as well as the fact that a lone wolf may not be able to stop the coming Armageddon.

    Description

Born near the red sand dunes of the Kalahari, PEARL HARRIS lived most of her life in South Africa, before taking the drastic step of relocating to the Czech Republic. “Czechoslovakia? Isn’t that Communist?” “Isn’t there a war going on over there?” were just some of the comments she had to grin and bear before leaving South Africa at the beginning of 2002. At an age when most are enjoying retirement, departing from the comfort zone of family and friends to a new home and career in a country with an unintelligible language and culture and climate far removed from her own, proved a challenge to be faced head-on by this descendant of another British pioneer. Pearl’s account of those first difficult years as an immigrant in a small Czech village will have you laughing out loud. This is an essential read for anyone contemplating emigration, as well as for the reader relaxing in the comfort of a familiar armchair to breathe a thankful sigh for not having chosen this tortuous path!

    Description

Meet Tiff Banks, the new gal on the paranormal mystery scene!

I’m told the dead are all around us. I wouldn’t know about that – I see only the violently slain. They could be victims of hit-and-run, innocents caught in a cross-fire or the murdered. They whisper to me and they never, ever, forget the face of their killer. They aren’t the only supernatural things I see. No, they’re not vampires, werewolves or fae – those things don’t exist. We live side by side with what some call the Otherworldy, but that’s too much of a mouthful for me. I call them demons. If you saw them as I do you’d know why. Right now I’m trying to find Lawrence, the missing son of a murdered woman. Or was she murdered? But Clarion PD gave me a partner I would rather shoot than work with. I can’t tell them he’s a demon. They’d think I’m crazy.

Along Came a Demon has been described as “A definite page turner full of twists to keep you guessing until the end.” ” . . . an edge-of-the-seat thriller that refuses to be put aside unfinished.” “. . . punchy, engaging and flowing prose . . . Plenty of twists and turns, humor and tension, action and intrigue.”

Delivered back to earth as an angel in raccoon form, Rocco is befriended by Miss Kitty, another reincarnate whose time as an angel has spanned the globe since she was killed by Indians in 1764. Description

BUFFALOed is the First Place Grand Prize Winner for fiction in the 2009 Indie Book Awards.

Young Norwegian immigrant Ovidia Odegard expects to find buffalo, the enduring symbol of the American West, when she signs on as Charles and Nancy Russell’s hired girl. Instead, she finds Indians more educated than most of the whites, social order as stratified as Eastern society in this proper Victorian age, and an assortment of boozers and bamboozlers, women chasers, and gamblers. In fact, Ovidia is quick to catch on to games of chance, which helps her repay the cost of passage to this confusing, but not so Wild West. But even Ovidia balks at the chicanery when she suspects the gigantic mural commissioned for the Montana State House is not painted by the great Charlie Russell, but by one of his students. Can this possibly be true? Western Writers of America Review in Roundup, February, 2009 —CKC—

This book will appeal to readers who love western fiction, readers who like to mix a little art with their fiction, and all readers who enjoy a good tall tale. Winfield does an excellent job of making the story real. Because the premise is so intriguing, one will want to check out fact from fiction using other sources. Description

Serena Murphy was losing her mind.

Every night Serena stood on the deck of O’Flanagans Tavern, searching Maine’s rugged coast for a sign of her husband’s body. Though he was pronounced lost at sea, Alan Murphy still haunted her as only his malevolent spirit could. In the loft above her tavern, Serena hears footsteps pace across her living room floor, yet when she turns, no one is there.

Alan would not let a little thing like death stop him from tormenting her. If she could just find his body, surely this torture would stop.

It had been ten years since Brett Murphy saw his sister in-law, although the separation was by design, to avoid temptation. Now Brett was in Victory Cove, not to declare his feelings for Serena, but to discover the truth about his brother’s death. In doing so, he must battle Serena’s ghosts, both real and contrived.

    Description

At its heart, The God Wars is a book about September 11, 2001, but the events of that day are barely mentioned. On one level, it’s a tale of utter hopelessness. On another, it’s about the clear path toward hope.

Some will see The God Wars as anti-religion, perhaps even anti-American. But the careful reader will see that it’s pro-peace, pro-sanity, and pro-love. Without being preachy, it’s about the benefits of setting aside dogma and mindless patriotism, and pledging allegiance instead to the worldwide community of humankind.

Four characters tell the story in the first person: a vagabond journalist with a knack for prophecy; a mysterious woman discovering that the bedrock of her reality — time — does not exist; a young bride who finds her true identity in a change of clothes; and a physics professor whose unifying “Theory of Everything” splinters his mind.

    Review – The Academician

The Academician – Ancient Chinese Historical Fiction Meets Fantasy

    Rating: 4 of 5

    Author: Edward C. Patterson
    Available: Paperback, Kindle

12th Century China – Graduating with the highest honor at the academy, Li K’ai-men is charged by his great teacher and master Han Lin with carrying out a number of warrants both public and secret.  Designated as the new superintendent of Su-chou, Li K’ai-men restores order and beauty to this chronically neglected area and proves he is more than an academic.  However, Li is not perfect and his errors in judgment only serve to build his character; soon his talents are recognized by the Emperor and K’ai-men finds himself tutor to a royal prince.   But political unrest and war soon come and China quickly finds itself turmoil.  Not only must Li K’ai-men protect his prince, but also the secret warrants associated with the Jade Owl relics.

In The Academician, Edward C. Patterson takes the reader into the heart of 12th century China and the historical events that unfold.  Patterson masterfully weaves in the fictional fantastic elements of the Jade Owl and the character of Li K’ai-men during the sweeping changes in China’s dynasties centering around the great painter but ineffective Emperor Hui and his family.  Fans of Patterson will once again find a story strong in character development and steeped in ancient Chinese culture and events of the day with hints of the fantastical elements that are sure to build in later installments.

Told from the perspective of K’u Ko-ling – Li K’ai-men’s faithful though occasionally acerbic servant – each chapter begins with a 1st person account of events detailed in the remainder of the chapter.  In this way, Patterson is able to avoid too much exposition while still conveying the richness of the history woven into the story.  Reminiscent of James Clavell’s work but injected with even stronger character development with the addition of the fantastical elements, Patterson creates an engaging and enlightening read.

Fans of the Jade Owl Legacy will find the beginnings of this relic and its associates.  Much like the back-story extras on a good collector’s addition of a DVD, the Academician provides that detailed background into what would later drive Rowden Grey and Nick Battle into the quest of a lifetime.  I’m looking forward to the next offering in the Southern Swallow series.

    Author Spotlight – Carole Sutton

From WWII London to climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, what an Inspiring Life…

I frequently wonder what inspired someone to write from a certain local, or how they were able to create an ingenious and creative plot device.  I’ve come to find the answer lies in the wonderful experiences authors have had that shaped their lives.  Many times, these stories are just as engaging to the reader as the author’s books.  With this in mind, I started the author spotlight.  This month’s spotlight author is Carole Sutton.  Enjoy!

    _______________________

TMBOA:   Ferryman’s setting is Cornwall England and sailing the English Channel. You currently reside in Australia. Tell us a little about where you’ve lived, why you choose Cornwall as the books setting, and how you’ve landed in Australia.

Sutton: Born in London in 1938 and evacuated to Exeter at the start of WWII, my earliest memory is the wail of sirens during the Exeter blitz in 1942. After the war, I remained in Exeter. In 1960, I married Bill, a man I had known for many years. His job took us to Cornwall. We lived in a small village near Falmouth where we raised our three children. I’ve always loved Cornwall.

They say ‘write what you know’ and after twenty years of working, sailing and living in the area, Cornwall seemed a natural setting for my first published book.

My parents and siblings had all migrated to Australia over the years. High unemployment and low payment rates in Cornwall was a worry, and thinking of our children’s future, we too applied for residency in Australia. But, by then Australia had closed its borders to migrants and it took us five attempts before they finally accepted us in 1981. We bought a retail business, a post office and news-agency, and ran it as a family with our now adult children. No time for writing in those days!

TMBOA:   Competitive sailing is one of the major backdrops for your murder mystery. From the detailed descriptions in the book, it appears you have quite a passion for this sport. When did you take up sailing and what first interested you in this sport?

Sutton: In the late 1950s I was lured into sailing by Bill, who was trying hard to woo me at the time. He’d joined a club and bought a sailing dinghy. It was a 12’ National, badly in need of repair. This we did together and once out in the water, I was hooked. Bill’s next dinghy was a Hornet, a slim racy boat. We joined the clubs’ racing programs in the River Exe.

After we were married and moved to Cornwall, the years sped by, our boats grew bigger to accommodate our growing family. Eventually, unable to pay big prices for new boats we bought ours in kit form, and built them ourselves. The first was a four berth 27ft Cutlass, we followed that a few years later with a six berth 32ft Rival. (This boat was the model for Touché, Pengelly’s boat in ‘Ferryman’.) I went to night school and learned coastal navigation before we started cruising with the family. Our sailing trips extended to the Channel Islands, Brittany and down to Bay of Biscay. The only racing we did was the annual cross Channel race from Falmouth to L’Aberwrache, and that was more for fun than any idea of winning.

TMBOA:   The book’s protagonist has an ingenious way of parading his prisoners about in public without anyone being the wiser. Without giving too much of the plot away, how did you come up with such an original idea?

Sutton: In the early 1960s, I attended a well planned Elizabethan Pageant. It was magic. At the time I was into photography. I still have a hundred, or so, 9’x 6’ b/w photographs I’d taken that day of men, women and children posing in Elizabethan costumes, of horses and jousting, and prisoners in stocks. It was obvious to me that people enjoyed acting out their roles. I remembered this when writing the Ferryman scenes. I could see that people had suspended their disbelief, and accepted as part of the show whatever was going on. I realised in that atmosphere my antagonist would be able to get away with something that, in a normal situation, would have been questionable.

TMBOA:   What do you want readers to feel, think, and say after reading your work?

Sutton: I’d like them to feel satisfied, dwell a few moments on the bits they liked best, close the book with a grunt  and say, “Well, that was a good yarn – when’s her next one coming out?”

TMBOA:   Have you had any formal tuition in writing, if not have you had help from another source?

Sutton: No formal training, but I have attended a creative writing course, joined a writers’ workshop, where a group of us met in a local pub. We’d sit in a quiet corner to read and discuss our chapters. Great fun, especially when it came to the sexy bits and we had to read quietly so as not to alert other customers!

I joined the Internet Writing Workshop.  From the Novels-L section, I learned almost everything I know about writing, both how to, and how NOT to. On this site you submit chapters to your peers and critique theirs in return.  See them at: http://www.internetwritingworkshop.org/.

I also joined YouWriteOn.com back when it first started. My books reached the Top Ten through peer reviewing and two of them were awarded professional critiques. Again, it’s a free site for writers. www.youwriteon.com

Currently, I meet fortnightly with two other professional writers where we drink tea, and ruthlessly edit each other’s chapters. We find it very helpful to have other eyes peruse our work.

TMBOA:  Finally, what’s next for you? Do you have a new novel in the works and if so what can you tell us about it?

Sutton: My next book, ‘And the Devil Laughed’ has been released this week, June 2009.  Set in Australia on the banks of the Parramatta River, ‘And the Devil Laughed’ was short-listed for New Holland Publishers Genre Fiction Award 2007.

Briefly: Undercover cop, Hannah Ford, is eager to return to work after trauma leave. She takes on a drug surveillance job in Draper’s Wharf. But when she arrives there, the town is in shock after the rape and murder of its local barmaid. Hannah, a rape victim with a career to salvage, needs to prove to herself and her boss that she can hack it.

Down the track, book #3 is on its way. We are back in Cornwall, though not with the Ferryman characters. It’s a cracking story and if you liked Ferryman, you’ll love this one. You can see more detail on both these books on my web: http://casutton.tripod.com/

How many other books . . . who knows?

As my daughter once said: “You flew a plane on your 50th birthday, you climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge on your 60th, saw your first novel published for your 70th . . . What will you do for your 80th?”

    Ah, that’s anyone’s guess!

    Review – Roadworks

Roadworks – An Engaging International Thriller!

    Rating: 4 of 5

    Author: Gerard Readett
    Available:
    Paperback, Kindle

The year is 2022 and the worlds leaders meet for a summit in Brussels Belgium.  This cities transportation system, a highly automated combination of auto, rail, and bus systems, is the envy of the world.  Hugh Ryan, a Transport Authority controller for the system, comes to work one day preparing to train a new employee when suddenly multiple systems begin to fail.  Automated parking garages crush cars backing up traffic, the rail system shuts down stranding passengers, and when multiple tanker trucks explode on the major highways, Hugh learns not only is the city in gridlock, but that terrorists have taken control of the system and are holding the city hostage.  Hugh, with his unique knowledge, finds himself at the center of solving a major international terrorist plot.   But can he do it in time?

Gerard Readett’s Roadworks is a refreshingly original thriller featuring a very unlikely public works employee turned hero.  While place in the not so distant future, the automated systems are within the realm of possibility and the Readett’s main character is so real that it is easy for the reader to get quickly engaged in the story.  Readett does an excellent job of weaving multiple plot lines of greed, deceit, terrorism, and politics which keeps the reader guessing throughout.

Roadworks is a fast paced, engaging, read.  It’s futuristic but not sci-fi.  Readett also conveys a compelling world message which is not at all over the top but rather seamlessly connects the opening prologue to the final chapters resolution.  Pick up a copy, you won’t be disappointed.

    Search Function Added!

Thanks to the success of TMBOA, we’ve quite a few books, comments and posts on the site.  I’ve tried to categorize reviews, marketing tips, news, polls, etc. so they are easier to find.  None-the-less, it may be hard to find that special book or comment from a particular author.  Therefore, I added a search function (see right hand column).  Try it out – find your favorite review.  This also makes it easier to find particular posts you might want to share through social bookmarking as I’ve tweeted about.  Remember, the more you bookmark your reviews on sites such as stumbleupon, delicious, etc. the more visibility you’ll have to your work.  Try it out!

In 2003, while sailing in the Atlantic ocean, merchant sailor Mohit Misra had a moment of enlightenment.  So much so, the previously confirmed atheist gave up his career to begin writing and convey his thoughts through couplets/dohas.  The result is a collection of poems found in Ponder Awhile.

Honestly, poetry is not my typical reading genre; readers of this review should keep that in mind.  I found some of Mohit’s offerings did cause me to ponder awhile.  Those dealing with religion, governments, and being one people without prejudice were the more powerful offerings.  To me poetry, like any good novel, movie, or art, causes one to reflect, take notice and delve a little deeper into the human condition.  A few of these poems did just that for me.

The remainder of the book is filled with some other creative though simple poems of everyday life which did not stay with me as much.  The poems about women seemed somewhat superficial but perhaps this was purposely done by the author to convey the emotions and reactions he was having were also superficial yet powerful, consuming, fleeting, and sometimes confusing.

Overall, an eclectic selection of  poems.

Longevity should be the rule and not the exception.” Dr. Estes is the father of Raw Foods, Disease Prevention and Life Extension. The New Valley

    • Language: English
    • ISBN-10: 0802118917
    • ISBN-13: 978-0802118912

    Description

The three linked novellas that comprise Josh Weil’s debut bring us into America’s remote and often unforgiving backcountry, and delicately open up the private worlds of three very different men as they confront love, loss, and their own personal demons.

Set in the hardscrabble hill country between West Virginia and Virginia, The New Valley is populated by characters striving to forge new lives in the absence of those they have loved. Told in three varied and distinct voices – from a soft-spoken middle-aged landscaper and beef farmer struggling to hold himself together after his dad’s suicide; to a health-obsessed single father desperate to control his reckless, overweight daughter; to a mildly retarded man who falls in love with a married woman intent on using him in a scheme that will wound them both – each novella is a vivid, stand-alone examination of uniquely romantic relationships. As the men struggle against grief, solitude, and obsession, their desperation slowly leads them all to commit acts that will bring both ruin and salvation.

Written with a deeply American tone and in empathetic, meticulously crafted prose, The New Valley is a tender exploration of resilience, isolation, and the deep, consuming ache for human connection.

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich days of the 1950’s were gone forever. World events, and pop culture had repercussions on the lives of the people you knew, your family, your friends, and your neighbors. Brother against Brother, brings to mind the War Between the States. World War One, was called the War to End All Wars, and the Great War, until the Big One. World War Two. The Forgotten War? Korea. Yet, never to be forgotten is Viet Nam, the Hated War. In spite of cries for peace and love, Viet Nam became the war fought in living rooms across America. The mid 1960’s saw the beginning of changes in attitudes that would trigger social unrest. Two people, one love, separated by time and distance with a despised war on one side, and growing protests to make love, not war on the other. The epistolary War Written Words is in the form of a series of letters exchanged by the characters, Jeff and Beth Madison during his tour of duty in South East Asia, with the exception of the three chapters at the end.

By the late 1960’s… The challenge that invigorated early attitudes, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”, seemed to have been long forgotten. Letters from Nam, returning soldiers, and a war that appeared to have no end, had shifted public opinion. “Hell No! We Won’t Go!” was the reply by the end of the decade. Music would swing from doo wop to acid rock. Hair grew from duck tails, to mop tops, ratted and teased, to flowers and beads. This novel is about relationships between people, and the effect that pop culture, and historical events had upon their lives. You know these people, they are your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and associates… every day, ordinary people. As the trilogy comes to it’s conclusion, Turn on, tune in, drop out…

The Turkish government let loose upon its own Armenian citizens its hordes of savage killers, recruited from its prisons, to perpetuate one of history’s most barbaric slaughters upon a peaceful and progressive people, massacring a million and a half of its three million Armenian population.

When the lovely Lady Genevieve Northwicke catches his eye, he ignores the warnings fired at him from all corners, resulting in the death of that lady’s reputation. Rather than facing the consequences of his actions, he flees. Miles must resolve the situation the only way he knows how: offer marriage to the sister of his beloved to rescue her from scandal. The erotic chapters of this consolidation are elaborations and omitted subscripts from writings of previously published books and some of those not yet published by K.S. Michaels and Penelope Ashe. Due to the scintillating nature of these sexually graphic stories, moral issues precluded them from print, until now. The characters of this book are neither vile nor raunchy, as some may have critiqued, but simply the fantasies, pervaded with passion, the authors wish to share in hopes to shed more light on the sensual characters within us all. There is a moment before the physical act has even begun . . . the moment of consensual query that flutters the heart, and defaults the rational. The House of the Vampire delivers a horror which seems to be lacking in recent vampire stories – prepare to be frightened and introduced to something very different. Blurring the lines between fact and fiction, The House of the Vampire is considered a classic among Victorian Gothic stories……He felt the presence of the hand of Reginald Clarke – unmistakably – groping in his brain as if searching for something that had still escaped him. He tried to move, to cry out, but his limbs were paralyzed…. Goes down the trail where Ann Rice feared to go!

    Review – Griffin’s Shadow

Griffin’s Shadow  – An Ancient Evil Grows in Power!shadow

Rating: 5 of 5, TMBOA Recommended
    Author:
    Leslie Ann Moore

    Available: Paperback

Deep in the bowels of The Black Tower, the elfin magic imprisoning an ancient evil is weakening.  Using it’s power of projection, the evil finds an accomplice to help in recapturing and releasing the key to it’s power.  Jelena Preseren, the half-elf and half-human unwitting vessel of the key, begins her training to unlock the power of her long dormant magically Talent.  Because of her newly acquired position in elf society  she also become a beacon of hope for the half breed elfin people who crave equality with the pure blood elves; though not all elves accept her and an secret conspiracy begins forms.  Meanwhile, humans and elves prepare for war and Ashinji – a pure blood elf and Jelena’s love interest – struggles to survive and return to his people.

Leslie Ann Moore’s Griffin’s Shadow picks up where Griffin’s Daughter left off.  I enjoyed the first book, but this chapter in the trilogy is even better.  While the first installment introduced the foundational elements of the story, it’s focus was primarily on the love interest between Jelena and Ashinji.  However, this novel injects considerably more fantasy elements such as the ancient evil sorcery as it grows in power.  The treachery and betrayal of family, politics, power of the ruling class, cruelty of prejudice, remorse of lost love, and overall action and tension is ramped and builds throughout the multiple story arcs.

Griffin’s Shadow is a masterfully crafted fantasy adventure which immerses readers in it’s characters and wonderfully created universe.  Once again, Moore seamlessly weaves in issues of prejudice while advancing the story.  My only complaint is I have to wait for the next book to see how this all resolves!  Most of the story arcs are left open at conclusion of this novel.  It left me with the same feeling I had at the end of The Empire Strikes Back when I first saw it as a kid having to wait for the release of the then final chapter of the series.

Griffin’s Daughter is an award winning novel and Griffin’s Shadow is more than worthy of additional national acclaim.

Being half-elf and half -human, Jelena Preseren lives life ridiculed and looked down upon by others.  Though her mother, who died giving birth to her, was the sister of the Duke of Amsara, this does little for Jelena who is forced to live her days working in the castle scullery.  Her only friend is her cousin Magnes who sees beyond her lineage.  Though she accepts her lot in life as a servant, Jelena draws the line when her uncle the Duke decides to sell her as a concubine.  She decides to flee and search for her Elven father.

Having learned of his own arranged marriage to someone other than his true love, Magnes joins Jelena.  While on their quest, Jelena discovers a strange power locked deep inside her.    Little does she know, that she is the vessel containing the magic from an ancient evil sorcerer banished centuries earlier but whose soul lives on searching for the key to his release.

Ashinji Sakehera, second son of an Elven Duke, is troubled by continued dreams of a girl he has yet to meet.  Once he and Jelena’s worlds collide, they find themselves inexplicably drawn to one another.  But how can a half-elf woman who is ostracized by both human and elf society ever have a romantic future with nobility?

Leslie Ann Moore’s Griffin’s Daughter is the first novel in a three part series.  It sets up a number of story arcs only one of which is closed at the books conclusion.  So be prepared to run out to purchase book two (which is also very good – see my review for Griffin’s Shadow).  Moore’s prose is refined and sets the tone and mood for the novel.  Apart from the good story telling, and wonderful fantasy elements, I really enjoyed the way Moore  weaves in the personal impact of prejudice.  Jelena is mistreated in both human and elven societies belonging to neither.  What is so sad is Jelena believes herself inferior because of the way others see and treat her.  No matter how much her cousin Magnes tells her otherwise or even her love Ashinji, Jelena truly believes she is not worthy of the love and friendship from those around her – all because of how she is treated by the majority.  What a wonderful glimpse into how prejudice is felt by those who experience it.

Moore’s debut novel earned her the 2008 Ben Franklin Award for Best First Fiction and it’s easy to see why.  This is a good book and the second installment is even better.  Please note, this may not be a suitable read for some younger readers as there are some adult themes presented occasionally throughout the story.  For those who enjoy a good, well written fantasy, pick up a copy of Griffin’s Daughter.

Guest Blog – Riding a Camel to School by Bernadette Simpson

Fascinated by her story, I asked if Bernadette Simpson would like to write a guest blog on TMBOA.  I love experiencing different cultures and her book, An ABC Escapade Through Egypt, helps kids discover the wonders of Egypt while in their own living rooms.  Enjoy!

    ________________________________________________________________

Will you live in a pyramid? Do they speak Egyptian there? Will you ride a camel to school?

    Feluka Dock

    Feluka Dock

These were the questions asked by my friends when I broke the news to them that, yes, my parents really were making me move to Egypt with them. Although my mother had originally promised otherwise, once my father was offered the job, my mother rescinded, saying she would miss me too much and that I must join them on this adventure. My parents tried to woo me with the prospect of graduating in front of the pyramids. But I was sixteen. I would be starting my senior year in high school in the fall. All I wanted to do was hang out with my girlfriends, go to prom with my boyfriend, and graduate.

While I knew the answers to the above questions, I knew little else about Egypt. The company that my father worked for attempted to make our move to this foreign land easier. The company provided Arabic classes, as well as tests to measure their ability to adjust, and a video for the employee’s family to watch as an introduction to Egypt. Here’s what I learned: Egypt is hot and dusty.  (Seriously, the video must have repeated that phrase a dozen times. It became a family joke.)

But even with my allergy to dust, my parents insisted that I join them. And it wasn’t like I had a choice. So five weeks into my senior year, the phone call came. My dad’s work visa had been finalized and we were booked on a flight for the coming weekend.

And so there I was – a teenager plucked from the comfort of her own neighborhood and friends and set down in the middle of hot and dusty Cairo. I learned quickly that life in Cairo was going to be nothing like life in Houston, Texas.

Instead of asking my father to borrow the car, I flagged down taxis, learned to give directions in Arabic, and haggle for fares as there were no working meters.

Instead of playing frisbee at the park, my friends and I drove to the desert behind my apartment and used discarded cardboard boxes to slide down sand dunes.

Instead of strolling through shopping malls for entertainment, we met at the docks along the Nile and rented a feluka, or sailboat, that would drift along the river as we listened to music and munched on snacks.

And while there is no denying that Egypt is hot and dusty, Egypt is so much more.

I learned that arriving on time is not as important as simply showing up.

I learned that there is always time to share a cup of tea or a light lunch with a friend – or a complete stranger.

I learned that happiness is not dependent on the quantity or quality of what you own but rather the family and friends with whom you share your days.

Photo of my neighbor, the camel. Dahab, South Sinai

There is a saying that if you drink from the water of the Nile, you are destined to return to Egypt. Well, I guess I got my fill of Nile water! After graduating (yes, in front of the pyramids) I returned to America to attend university but spent every summer and winter break visiting my parents in Cairo. It was on one of those summer breaks – and on a feluka – that my heart was fully captured by Egypt, and an Egyptian! I made the decision that after graduation I would move to Egypt to begin my teaching career. And I’ve been here ever since.

I spent the first eight years teaching at various schools in Cairo and the majority of my students were Egyptian children. We learned from each other every day – and we especially enjoyed learning from books. My students eagerly awaited each new story that I shared with them. As I completed my graduate studies focusing on reading and English as a second language, it finally dawned on me that my students had very, very few books that reflected their country, their life, or the people they knew. We read about Thanksgiving and baseball, snowstorms and summer camp, but never about Ramadan or soccer or sandstorms. I searched every bookstore for something they could relate to but found nothing.

So I decided to rectify the situation by creating my own book. And although I first began by writing fictional stories set in Cairo, my passion for learning, language, and photography took over and I ended up writing a nonfiction alphabet book – An ABC Escapade through Egypt. (http://www.bernadettesimpson.com/aboutbook.html)

To complete my project, I took a break from teaching and moved to a small seaside town on the Sinai Peninsula. While technically part of Egypt, Sinai is a different world altogether and one that again encourages me to explore this land – with camera in hand of course, hoping to share the many wonders of modern Egypt with the rest of the world through my photo blog (http://escapadethroughegypt.wordpress.com/).

And while I never actually rode a camel during my student years, I now have one as a neighbor!

New and Easier to track Tag You’re It page

First off, thank you to all the author’s who have joined and are participating in the Tag My Book on Amazon experiment!

Because of it’s success, we recently added the UK page!

However we have found the original page to now be too long and frankly a little intimidating especially for new folks.  So, I’ve reformatted the “Tag You’re It” page to:

    1. Highlight the latest months additions so that new folks get tags straight away!

    2. For all other books, they are now listed on links based on the month they were added.  This helps break up tagging for new authors and also helps us folks who have been around for a while keep track of what we have and haven’t tagged.

Let me know what you think of the new page!

    Book Review – Ferryman

Ferryman – Murder on the English Channel!

Rating: 5 of 5, TMBOA Recommended
    Author: Carole Sutton

    Available: Paperback

After scrimping and saving all his life, Steven Pengelly flies to Guernsey, an island in the English Channel, to buy a beautiful thirty-foot sailboat to live his dream.  Preparing to take his new boat – Touché - back across the Channel to Cornwall, Steven’s luck further improves.  The young attractive blond that had shown him the boat – Angela Dupont, asks him for a lift to the mainland.  Not one turn down a free crewmember or a pretty face, Steven takes her on and their trip across the channel sparks a romance.  All is well until Steven learns Angela to be more opportunistic than partner willing to dump him quickly in search of a greater fish to hook.  Suddenly, she turns up missing and Steven’s world crashes down around him.  Convinced she has been murdered, investigator’s believe Steven to be the main suspect.   Though there is no body, the evidence against Steven mounts leading to his conviction.

Two years later, Angela’s body turns up.  Forensics, however, prove her murder to be recent, confirming Steven’s innocence.  After his release, all Steven wants to do is move on with his life, but another young woman searches him out seeking his help in finding her recently missing sister.  Believing there is a connection between her missing sister and Angela’s murderer, she convinces Steven to help find those guilty.

Carole Sutton’s Ferryman pulses with action, intrigue, and mystery.  Those who love sailing will appreciate the passages describing the thrill of racing, the battling with the elements, the danger, and the teamwork needed to survive and thrive in competition.  The novel’s locals are wonderfully described from the ports on Guernsey to the frequently visited sailing haunts.   Sutton also seamlessly alternates between the novel’s 1970s present day events and the events that unfolded years earlier during Angela’s abduction.  She introduces each subplot carefully wetting the readers appetite throughout keeping the mystery moving forward.  Sutton also shows great care in building the sociopathic foundations for the book’s antagonist.  This ensures credibility and realism to this character that in lesser books would have been flat and unrealistic.

I really enjoyed this book.  I found myself turning the pages at a rapid pace and staying up late to make my way to the end’s climax.  Ferryman is one of this years favorites for me.  I’m looking forward to Sutton’s next release.

    Review – Santuary of Darkness

Sanctuary of Darkness – A Tragic Vampire Story of Love and Loss

    Rating: 4 of 5
    Author: Titus McGuire

    Available: Paperback, Hardcover

In his first year of life and after the untimely death of his father, Titus McGuire along with his sister and mother move to England with his new stepfather in the year 1582.  Unfortunately his stepfather is a retched man.  His marriage to Titus’ mother had been arranged and after bearing her new husband a son – he tires of her.  Years later Titus witnesses the death of his mother and sister at his stepfather’s hands – burned at the stake for conspiring against the church.

Titus desires a life of his own as well as a bride.  Unfortunately, he is denied at every turn until Titus’ suddenly finds himself smitten with his stepbrother’s fiancé.  Deciding to risk everything, Titus escapes his life of bondage for true love but is haunted by dreams and visions of another woman pulling him back home.  Soon he is torn between his love for his wife and his enchanting dream girl – he must choose and his choice lays the foundation for a series of events that Titus may regret for centuries to come.

Written under the pen name of Titus McGuire, the first half of Sanctuary of Darkness is a strong story of forbidden love and betrayal.  I was reminded of the way Ken Follett sets up his novels with characters which desire to be together yet are denied at every turn.  The tension between Titus, the stepfather, stepbrother, and two love interests is a compelling read.  However, the second half of the story, once Titus becomes a vampire, takes a different turn.  The story remains a compelling read, but the relationship tension that drove the first half of the novel gives way to the challenges of living life as a vampire.

I found myself frequently frustrated with Titus who becomes a creature of emotion frequently questioning his love and life long dreams with a variety of women.  His desire for revenge at all costs and abandonment of his children (not sure what happened with his first child) had me shaking the book at times.  None-the-less, I was completely drawn into this world and could not stop turning the pages.  Though the end reaches a climatic conclusion, the author leaves open a number of story arcs setting of the fruits of a sequel.  All and all, an entertaining, though at times, frustrating read.

Book Review – An ABC Escapade Through Egypt

An ABC Escapade Through Egypt – A Beautiful Cultural Experience

    Rating: 4 of 5
    Author: Bernadette Simpson

One not only reads but views Bernadette Simpson’s An ABC Escapade Through Egypt.  Filled with beautiful photographs of Egypt’s rich culture, the book reads like a children’s version of The Amazon Race.  Using the alphabet and alliteration as the backbone driving the various excursions through this amazing country, Simpson introduces the reader to the food, entertainment, history, culture, wildlife, transportation, and other facets of Egyptian life.  There is even a recipe for kids to make doe-ah (don’t know what this is – pick up the book!).

Want to learn more about a Camel’s hump?  What about the many uses of date palm trees?  Learn about the many types mangos and what a prickly pear is.  Are hieroglyphics more your interest?  Well it’s all here.

Don’t let the title fool you.  This is not a preschool letter learning book for pre-school children, though they are sure to enjoy the wonderful pictures.  This is a thoughtful, informative journey for 9-12 year olds which can be fully appreciated by adults as well.  Certainly, Bernadette’s rich background, having lived all over the world and now residing in the small town of Dahab in South Sinai, has provided her the sensitivity to experience and convey the wonders of Egypt.

Be sure to visit Bernadette’s website to learn more about her and Egypt (http://www.bernadettesimpson.com).

As an extra treat, visit Ginda Simpson’s (Berndaette’s mother) webpage; she is an artist and writer living in Umbria Italy (http://www.gindasimpson.com/NEW%20Index.htm).

Poll: When do you Tweet and the Retweet Experiment

As I’ve already posted, Twitter can be a very powerful tool for building a brand and marketing a product or service.  But tweets are a constant stream of information.  Chances are, if you are following a number of people and they are tweeting all day, you’re likely not going to see or read all of their tweets unless you’ve got them streaming to your desktop all day long.

This means that your tweets are likely not seen by all of your followers for the same reason.  So, there most be a prime time for tweets – when folks are most likely to be on twitter tweeting and reading tweets.

To find the tweet prime time, please take a moment to fill out this simple poll below to indicate your tweet times.

    The Retweet

Also, as I mentioned in my earlier post, the retweet is one of the most under rated yet most powerful features of twitter.  In theory, a tweet can go viral and reach thousands of people.  To test this, please tweet and retweet this post (use something like bigtweet to make it easy).   This serves two purposes – it tests the possibility of a viral tweet, and if provides more folks to vote in the tweeting poll which means the data is more meaningful.  Thanks and check back often to see the results!

    Review – The Third Peregrination

The Third Peregrination  – The Relics Re-awaken

Rating: 5 of 5 TMBOA Recommended
    Author: Edward C. Patterson

    Available: Paperback, Kindle

After vanquishing the evil empress Wu Tze-t’ien, Rowden Gray and Nick Battle believed the Jade Owl to be forever tamed.  But both are wrong.  One year has passed and Nick receives an artifact, an opal ring, which awakens these ancient relics.  Once again The Jade Owl and Joy of Finches are drawn to one another but this time things are much different.  Interacting with a silken banner depicting life of long ago China, they unlock a hidden message.  Learning this banner is one of seven sisters, they set off on an adventure to find the remaining sisters and solve yet another China mystery.

However, it is not only the relics that have changed, but Nick and Rowden as well.  Something is happening to them.  Haunted by dreams and mental glimmers which direct their path forward, they soon realize they are not just solving a mystery but are carrying out an ancient prophecy – a prophecy which could destroy the world.

In The Third Peregrination, Edward C Patterson continues The Jade Owl series.  This installment brings back the wonderful characters introduced in the first book but also offers some new comers including Rowden’s ex-wife.  These characters add to the adventure by providing appropriate emotional conflict and story arcs to augment the driving fantasy mystery they are to solve.  Where the first book was more cerebral and even paced, this 600 plus page novel really amps up the action and fantasy elements.  As always, Patterson’s accomplished technique and writing style are spot on.  His characters are real and descriptions vivid.  Similar to the first novel, I enjoyed the historical fiction and cultural lessons imparted throughout this novel.

This is the second of a multiple book series and while the ending is completely satisfying, Patterson introduces the thread which teases at the next installment.  The Third Peregrination is a great read – 5 stars!

    Making the most of Twitter!

    What the heck?

I’ll be honest.  When I first looked at twitter I thought this seemed worthless for anything practical.  I saw a stream of updates like “at the mall”, “just watched gunsmoke”, “do you think Obama is good looking”, etc.  How could this ever be useful for networking, marketing, etc?  So I ignored it.  Then it kept growing and many authors I knew were “tweeting”.  “Really,” I thought.  What does one tweet about?

Like anything else, the answer is your tweets must be consistent with the brand you are building.  So if you are a book editor, you tweet about interesting articles related to editing, your services, latest edited book, and so on.  If you are a musician, you tweet about gigs you’ve played, local clubs and their crowds, latest artist news – you get the idea. You might want to even have multiple twitter accounts for the different brands you have – for example you might have a personal account where you are updating friends and family and a professional account for your business brand.  That way folks who are following you professionally aren’t confused by your tweet about the baby’s diaper rash.

    How and where to start

As I mention above, decide what your brand or brands will be and open the appropriate accounts on twitter.  But what now?  You’ve got an account but how to connect.

    Finding friends

So now it’s time to starting following others and inviting folks to follow you.  The best place to start is your email account which Twitter can pull your contacts from.  However, if you are looking to connect professionally as an author, there are a number of sites on the Internet that will help you connect with potential twitter friends.  Instead of listing the gazillion options for this.  I’m going to list two I’ve found useful (please feel free to comment on this post to add your own).

    justtweetit1Just Tweet It

This is a site where you add your twitter info to the directory related to your genre/brand.  If you click on the JustTweetIt bird it will link you directly to the writers/authors page.  Check out all of the wonderful writers and authors and follow some.  To add yourself, click the “hey, click your name to add it to the directory” blue text icon at the left hand part of the page near the top.  Give it some time as this is a long site full of folks to follow.

    mrtweet Mr. Tweet

Mr. Tweet is great.  This site will analyze who you are following, who is following you, let you make recommendations, etc.  It updates every couple of weeks and let’s you know what changes it thinks you should make.  Not everything is perfect, but it is a good site to help you wade through the huge twitter universe of users (again, click on the graphic to go there!).

    Managing Twitter

For me, what you get on the twitter site makes it less than ideal to manage twitter.  The constant stream of information (especially if you’ve missed twitter for a couple for hours, makes it hard to find tweets of interest).  Therefore, here are two recommendations I have:

    TweetDeck

Download this desktop program as quick as you can.  This is great.  You can create multiple columns to track whatever you like (specific people, groups, your posts, replies, etc.).  Also, this application shortens URLs so that you can put all sorts of links and not use up precious character counts.  The display makes it super easy to reply and retweet as well.  You’ve love it.

    Tiny Twitter

If you like to track tweets on your mobile, try tiny twitter.  It’s fast and simple and has a good interface.  However, happy to hear of other apps that work well on mobiles.  Let me know.

Retweet – The Key To Word of Mouth Success

Make sure to interact with your followers and support their tweets to keep your followers!  So now whenever you post, all your followers are informed and hopefully interested and engaged in what you have to say.  Maybe you’ve led them to a wonderful URL that they’ll appreciate and use.  But the real power of twitter is the potential for “the viral effect”.

Einstein is quoted as having said that the most powerful force in the universe is compounded interest.  Well, the viral effect on twitter is exactly that.  If you have 200 followers and you send out a tweet, 200 followers see it.  But, if they retweet it to their followers – watch out!

Let’s say each of them has 10 followers.  If they all “retweet” your post – now it has reached 2200 people.  And what if each of those people retweet it to their 5 friends each.  Now you are well over 10,000 people seeing your little tweet sending them to some URL, product, or whatever.

Starting to see the practical application of Twitter now?

How do you get folks to retweet?  Well, write good content and ask! Taking my own advice.  Please tweet and retweet this blog article as much as possible (assuming you like it)!

    How does one Retweet (RT)

If you are using TweetDeck or most desktop Twitter apps there is usually a retweet option.  Otherwise, if you are using twitter off of their homepage, copy the original tweet, then paste it into your “What are you doing” tweetbox at the top of the page. With the original message in your tweetbox,  insert the cursor before the first character in the original tweet and type “RT @” then click on the “update” command button.

    Good luck and happy tweeting!

P.S. Don’t forget to check out the related post on when to tweet! Take the poll: Click Here

    Review – Mr. Jefferson’s Piano

Mr. Jefferson’s Piano and other Central Harlem Stories – A Moving Fictional Memoir

    Rating: 4 of 5

    Author: Betty Wilson
    Available: Paperback, Kindle

Melba Farris is a long way from Ohio where she grew up.  Living in New York City in the late 1970s, she applies for a position managing the cities’ public housing units in Central Harlem.  Given little to no training and without much supervision, she’s suddenly responsible for managing numerous buildings and tenants.  Managers with drinking problems, building supers who meticulously sweep their streets, pistol packing tenants, crazy directives from the “suits” downtown, and touching stories of love and loss are part of Melba’s everyday life.  Giving her all to her job, tenants, and buildings provides a sense of purpose and escape for Melba who, at home, is a victim of spousal abuse.

Though Betty Wilson’s Mr. Jefferson’s Piano is written as a fictional memoir, it is clear from the depth and detail of the 68 short stories that Ms. Wilson has leveraged her twenty years of experience as a New York City property manager.  Similar to her novel’s heroine, Wilson herself was a Sloan Award winner for her public service.  This is a uniquely written novel as it isn’t necessarily just a memoir.  Wilson has added work memo’s, notes to file, and letters collected by her fictional character over the years and integrates them throughout Melba’s recounting of various experiences she’s had on the job.  This adds such a sense of realism it’s hard to believe this is a fictional account.

One of the reasons I enjoyed this novel was the way Wilson has different characters come in and out of Melba’s life.  Like Melba, we only see a glimpse of their lives without knowing necessarily how each of their stories resolve.  This reminded me of what drew me to the first season of the television show ER where patients would come in and out of the emergency room and one never knew exactly how their stories resolved – just like in real life.  Also, similar to an ER physician, Melba must cope with the frequent tragic lives she encounters on a daily basis.  As a result, she occasionally comes off a little dispassionate.  For those concerned they may be left frustrated by this method of story telling, Farris does close a number of these open arcs at the books conclusion.

Some stories are shocking, for example the drug user who has clogged his toilet with numerous needles requiring him to use his bathtub for collecting human waste.  Others stories are touching, such as the one recounting the history of Mr. Jefferson’s Piano.   After reading this novel, I have new found respect for the difficult, dangerous, yet rewarding social work undertaken by city property managers.

Getting the most of Amazon Listmania

    How to Maximize Amazon’s Listmania

Most everyone knows about Amazon’s Listmania option.  But do you know how to get the best most out of it?

The goal: to have your book be on a list frequently provided to Amazon customers as they search for their favorite books.

What do I mean by this?

Let’s take a look at an example.  In the juvenile fiction world, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is extremely successful.  If I search on this book, the following appears on Amazon.

    listmania1

Notice on the left of the page the two Listmania! lists featured.

If either of these were your list with your book in the list, it would likely get a lot of visibility. Your book may even appear here as well.

So the key is to identify other more popular books in the same genre as your book and populate your listmania list with these books as well as your own.

Every time one of these other books is searched on, your list may appear in the side panel just like the example shown.

In order to increase the likelihood of your list showing up during one of these searches versus someone else’s list having the same book in it, I’ve set up the “Tag My Listmania” page.  Check it out!
