Tag You’re It! – Hitting #1 on Amazon

Do you know what tags are and how to use them to your benefit?

Should you care about tags?

The answer.

Absolutely!

Why?

Visibility – plain and simple.

Our shared story

Like any author, you’ve spent months, perhaps years writing your novel. Hours of writing and re-writing, conversations with your editor, discussions over format and typesetting, more editing, self doubt, cover design, back blur, reviews, placement, on and on. Now it’s published but how do you get that visibility that will translate into book sales? You may have written the next Harry Potter but without marketing how will anyone know? Even if your book is in brick and mortar stores, it’s likely you’re not getting prime placement on an end cap – so you have to hope someone spots the spine of the book, pulls it off the shelf, reads the blurb and decides to buy. Lots left to chance in this scenario with over 80,000 books published a year.

Online, Amazon is king.

The Holy Grail – bestseller lists or maybe the “movers and shakers” list. Tough for any author to hit especially with over 5,000,000 books on Amazon. And if you hit the bestseller list, well, you really don’t have to worry about visibility. What about the other 4 million plus books out there?

The key – book “tags”. Continue reading

Description

Recovering from a gunshot wound he’d received while in the line of duty, NYPD Detective Mick O’Shaughnessy is in need of some relaxing time away from the big city. A vacation in the peaceful, scenic Bikini Atoll, a scuba diver’s paradise, could be the panacea to heal his wounded leg as well as his shattered nerves. Then again, maybe it isn’t. The Majestic Resort Hotel, unfortunately, does not turn out to be the bastion of tranquility Mick had hoped to enjoy. Immediately upon arrival, Mick inadvertently finds himself dropped in the middle of an international money laundering operation, a territorial feud between the island natives and the resort developers, and an impending mob war between the Russian Mafia and the Japanese Yakuza. If that weren’t nerve-wracking enough, the many years of nuclear testing that had taken place in Bikini Atoll after World War II have had an unusual effect on the sea life in the lagoon—and the freakishly large mutant barracuda who dwells there perceives all scuba-diving tourists as lunch meat.

Barracuda is a fast-paced story in which international intrigue, environmental catastrophe, and the sense of cultural pride collide. Even on vacation, Mick O’Shaughnessy is a detective at heart, and he refuses to fly away from the chaos in this island paradise until all questions are answered and feelings of safety and justice take over the atoll.

The historical significance of the location and the underwater depictions in Barracuda are well researched, with the story incorporating the history of Bikini Atoll in the years after World War II, authentic scuba-diving knowledge, and proper police procedure into its plot, characters, and scenic detail. Barracuda is a fast-paced thriller which will be enjoyed by readers who appreciate the aquatic action of Jaws, the mob intrigue of The Godfather, and the police procedural sense of The Onion Field.

A wonderful debut book- an ancient reaching out to present day, August 22, 2008
By ellen “ellen in atlanta” (Atlanta, Georgia USA) – See all my reviews

“Museums and mythology, ancient Egypt and breaking barriers between then and now…those are a few of my favorite things!
A young research assistant Lily Evans marvels at the exhibit of Amisihathor, an excellently preserved tomb on exhibit. As she looks at this woman’s mummy, an elderly lady, Dame Ursula Allingham, draws her into a most strange but alluring conversation. She feels the soul of Amisihathor is caught in the shadows, not able to travel to the Field of Reeds, the Beautiful West – Heaven in the ancient Egyptian culture.
Dame Ursula tells (Lily) Amisihathor’s story and says Lily must help this soul in shadows to find peace.”

An enchanting book, September 22, 2008

“Susan McLeod’s “Soul and Shadow” is an enchanting and surprising little book. At barely over 120 pages, I was amazed at the wealth of layers Ms. McLeod managed to fit in it. To best illustrate this, let me borrow a little excerpt from the very book here:

“A mysterious old woman. Ancient magic and restless spirits. A tall, dark and handsome stranger. English aristocracy. Money. Madness. What are we missing? Ah, danger. I do not suppose there was a deranged servant lurking around their house?”

Well, I could add a good few more things to this mix, but I am going to limit them to just a handful: a handsome ex-boyfriend, meddlesome mother, demanding boss, jealous cat and fascinating relics. By now you probably get the picture…”

Description

Was She from the Past, the Future, or Both?

As the encroaching flames grew greater, Gayle’s braving face swelled red with ashen blisters. Her waist length hair ignited, as did her blood-stained dress. The pain more immense by every passing moment, Gayle wrestled with the ropes that bound her. The villagers, now with less anger in their eyes, read only of grotesque curiosity, curious of death and its nature of arrival. Gayle burned before their very eyes and yet no one of the phlegmatic crowd would hide from the sight. A painful, spine-chilling, scream exuded through the air.
Since childhood, Jason had been haunted by dreams of Gayle, a witch who was burned at the stake centuries before. Linked in a way that no one else can quite understand or explain, these souls discover how difficult-and yet, how easy-it is to travel lifetimes, despite the toils of time and eternity.
In another time, and another place, Mike, a young and precocious soul, is himself haunted by strange dreams and visions. What is the source of his latent powers? And who is the mysterious lady in white who meets him at every turn?
Love Returns Through the Portal of Time is a dazzling novel of the power of love and the endurance of the human spirit. Love Returns Through The Portal of Time: A “true love” story.

You are privy to information most would never understand. Many would never believe. You, yourself, find it to be the ultimate key to life and love; the key to finding your soul mate and all that applies. The weird of destiny is truly at our fingertips.
But now, we go one step further with those feelings we all get of deja vu, feelings of familiarity in other places and other people, uncanny abilities, special talents never before practiced.
One step further…to the next life.
What would you do? How would you prepare yourself?
Once you have found your soul mate. You are successful. You have made all your dreams come true. You have mastered your psyche. What is next?
In the spectrum of time on Earth, a lifetime is but a fleeting moment, a measurement as small as a grain of sand amongst all the beaches of ten worlds. The sentient, incarnate realm of which we consider a finite age ends the term of body and soul with a word we call death. But does it really end there? What happens to the soul? Does it live on? Where?
If you knew you were going to be born again on this planet, what steps would you take to insure that you find your soul mate, again?
Read ‘Love Returns Through The Portal of Time’ and find what Gayle, Jason and Mike do to find themselves in the next life.

Not just another book about dogs, but a collection of stories, with adorable photos, of many homeless dogs who were scheduled to die in shelters around the country. They were saved from euthanasia by a group of volunteers with the Dog Rescue Railroad – an informal group of hundreds of thousands of internet users who get dogs out of shelters and then drive a leg of a trip from one state to another where the dog will be or already has been adopted. Some of these stories are heartbreaking, and some will make you split your sides laughing at what can happen in a car with a dog if you are not prepared. This book will reaffirm your faith in the goodness of people who spend their weekends doing their small part to help the millions of dogs in animal shelters across this country. Maybe you might want to try it yourself. There is a detailed section in the back that gives you information on how to volunteer.

Description

Loyalty and love clash with honor and conviction in this award-winning, epic Civil War love story.

Winner of two Best Regional Fiction awards since its release in January 2008, Shades of Gray chronicles the clash of a Confederate cavalry commander with a Union spy as they defend their beliefs, their country, and their honor. Lauded by historians and romance readers alike, Shades of Gray takes readers across the rolling hills of northern Virginia in a page-turning tale of courage that illuminates the fine line between friends and enemies at a time when traditions and principles were worth defending at all costs. Recounting a perspective of the conflict rarely seen, the novel exposes the private side of the men and women who were caught up in the contest, as they struggle with fulfilling their duty to God and country while remaining true to their own hearts and minds.

The Historical Novel Society called Shades of Gray “a sympathetic, loving portrait,” while Civil War author Virginia Morton describes it as “an incredible achievement and a treasure.”

“Well written and expertly executed. You cannot leave this book unchanged in your understanding of the souls of the Civil War.” – Book Review Journal

“[Emotions] seem to transcend the pages to settle in the very marrow of the reader’s bones. Jessica James has produced a tremendous and wonderful saga about love, loyalty and honor for which she must lauded.” – Bookpleasures.com

“A beautiful story with a timeless message. It touched my heart and soul.” – Catherine Bennett, Amazon Reviewer

A neighborhood bookie peddles athletes to college coaches and develops a sport betting operation centered on high school games. He recruits an accomplice to execute his last bet, one that could set them up financially for life but is fraught with danger. The Chicago Police investigate the greedy gamblers who might try to manipulate a high school basketball playoff game. A chance meeting between the father of a mediocre student-athlete and the bookie puts in motion a sequence of events transforming the player into a Division 1 prospect using unorthodox basketball training methods. Corrupt adults, who selfishly engage in risky and exploitive behaviors, surround the athlete: gangland profiteers, win-at-all-cost coaches, greedy street agents, shoe company representatives, college recruiters, disloyal lovers, and others. Advantage Disadvantage examines the motivations that drive the surrounding adults to corruption, betrayal, and greed.

Description

In a humorous, futuristic “take” on the Greek legend of Persephone’s abduction by the dark god of the Underworld, a god-Emperor from another galaxy visits Earth to abduct the mate of his dreams.

Checkmate
The truth could wait. She had given him an idea…

Sex was a serious matter, a grim pleasure, or so he’d always thought. It had never been an occasion for laughter or irreverent conversation—until Djinni accused him of fishy mating habits, and since then he hadn’t taken sex seriously at all.
Lovemaking had never been such fun. Much as he’d longed for her to know and accept the truth about him, he didn’t want this blissful intimacy to end.
The truth could wait. She had given him an idea. A very wicked idea. A perfect excuse for the remaining rut-raged days and nights of debauchery and deception to come.
“I want to do it all,” he breathed. “I want to make love to you according to the ways of every sexually reproducing species in all the Communicating Worlds. Every one. From frogs to Great Djinn. After that, we’ll work up to thrusting Tantric sex.”
“Oh, Stars,” she gasped.
“And I take that as informed consent.”

Description

As Texas becomes the twenty-eighth state issues still remain with Mexico. Santa Anna returns to power after his exile in Cuba. He raises an army to take control of the province of California, and his threat to retake Texas by force. His demand was that Texas was to remain a republic, but since she joined with the Federal States, the threat was renewed for all-out war! The Comanche and Kiowa nations found themselves in the middle of this battle, so they made an uneasy truce with some settlers that they knew would represent their interests. Andrew was a freed slave that was adopted by the Cherokee. Along with his Cherokee brother-in-law, Red Bird, he farmed and traded wild horses to the army. The Comanche and Kiowa allowed Andrew, and his family to hunt buffalo, and capture wild horses on their land. Since Andrew lived on the edge of their property, and the Dove settlement, they trusted him to help keep the rift-raft out of their lands. Their trust was well placed as Andrew helped supply horses for the army that was sorely spread thin. A bad illness swept over the Texan army, so Andrew and his family help out at Fort Worth since he was a veteran of the San Jacinto battle. They travel to Northern Mexico with the Tejanos to deliver horses to the Federal army under General Zachary Taylor, the future president of the Federal States. They find themselves in the thick of battle trying to recapture Santa Anna. Read the true story about the battle for peace in Texas, with the real characters, and true events that make our history great!

A Princess from a “superior” race was married to an alien Prince as living proof of a political alliance. At the time of the marriage/peace treaty no one thought that the Prince would become King of his people, and that an heir would be necessary. After many fruitless years, the Queen (as she now is) realizes that her only hope of keeping the peace is to find a sperm donor from her own race who has the same eye color as her alien mate’s, whom she can trust, and who is not too closely related to her.

When he says “No!” the stakes are too high for her to give up.

Tao Cycle Therapy: Natural Happiness via Self Directed Cure for Chronic Anxiety and Depresssion

Description

Maybe most people don’t realize this, but Modern Science already knows how to cure the most common forms of chronic Anxiety & Depression. But making that information widely understood doesn’t exactly sell a lot of anti-anxiety drugs now does it? As far back as Freud, the answers have been widely accepted and well understood. I’ll tell you right here, right now:
Anxiety is an Internal Conflict between your conscious brain and your subconscious brain caused by the denial and repression of societally shunned animal impulses. You have societally conditioned beliefs and
you have primitive instinctual impulses. The primitive impulses are your true initial feelings. These are the impulses that Lie Detector Tests, Body Language & Facial Recognition Experts are trying to detect because these first impulses do not lie. They represent your true feelings, whether you’re conscious of them or not. Societally conditioned beliefs are the beliefs that you learn. They represent what society wants you to believe for the good of the society as a whole. When something or someone frustrates you, your first impulse is to do something about it. Seconds later however, your conditioned beliefs kick in and you hold back. You control yourself. Well guess what? Your primitive brain doesn’t like that at all and it fights for recognition.
In certain situations, like when those primitive impulses are aggressive or sexual, and society doesn’t want you having them, you are forced to deny that you are having them. Now your brain is really, really angry. And you my friend have just embarked on a lifelong journey of chronic Anxiety and Depression, not to mention all the destructive derivatives. No worries though. We can fix it!

Description

“Imagine listening to an interview of Jesus of Nazareth. Most of us would be sitting there just praying that the host would delve into the issues that are near and dear to us. In her book, MESSAGES FROM JESUS, Mary Ann Johnston shares with the world hours of conversation she had with the One known as The Christ. Chances are, if you have a question for Him, the answer lies in these pages, as the essence of the spiritual life, modern religion, world affairs, and the needs of society are all dealt with rather comprehensively.

“Nothing that I or the author could say will convince anyone skeptical of these pages’ origin about their authenticity. But then again, only personal conviction will allow any scripture to be thought of as veritable. I encourage you to delve into this work and find out for yourself if Truth is present here. My guess is, regardless of what you determine, you won’t skip a page.”

Description

The mining colony at Drumwall Fortress on the planet of Cumaro was the ideal assignment: pristine, wild, and beautiful; with but one deadly flaw; Lord Banyon, the local tribal chieftain of the Mautlaut.

Two years prior to Father Andrew’s arrival, his predecessor, Father Menlo, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. But now, a Mautlaut runner has brought a message from Lord Banyon – written in faultless English. Could Father Menlo still be alive?

But as Father Andrew begins to solve the baffling disappearance of his predecessor, he is haunted by yet another personal mystery. In discovering an ancient Cumaron text in a long forgotten library at Drumwall, Father Andrew begins experiencing visions. Are these visions of God, or are they a split from reality and a further spiraling downward into madness?

Reviews:

“A new parish priest arrives at the mining colony on the planet Cumaro. He soon discovers that his predecessor may have met a terrible fate, and that soon he may meet the same fate!

“The barbaric locals test this priest’s faith and inadvertently push him along the spiritual journey we are all meant for yet few take up with any earnestness! While many (might) shy from this mighty novel, they will be the same who shy from the Cross of Christ! This is what Christian SF is meant to be!! I offer my highest recommendation!”
– Vincent Malzahn, Catholic Writers’ Association

“Drumwall is the story of one man’s struggle to maintain faith in a resistant society. Set in the future on another world, Drumwall is a story relevant to today, a story to be treasured.”

With 90 reproductions of the artist’s prints, designs grouped and discussed according to subject, and with illustrations of publishers’ marks, artist’s signatures, and the names of figures commonly inscribed upon his works, this reference guide provides the most comprehensive resource for identifying the subjects portrayed in Utamaro’s prints to date.

Reviews:
Sometimes a first novel can hold the promise of something fine that will materialize as an author matures in his craft. For Canadian author David Korinetz, however, his first novel is polished, his plot expertly devised, and his characters uniquely drawn. Here there is the promise of much more for years to come. – by Janie Franz for MyShelf.com.

If you have read and enjoyed the Fantasy books written by such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien, S.M. Stirling or L.E. Modesitt jr., it is likely that you will enjoy this new entry to the Fantasy genre. – by Allen Hustad, for the Kelowna Daily Courier.

With deft humour and unflinching honesty, Kathy-Diane Leveille unveils life’s absurdities, the painful mistakes we all make and manage to survive. Rooted in working class experience, each story in Roads Unravelling traces the arc of a woman’s awakening and her struggle to navigate new and unfamiliar territory. Though Leveille’s characters are full of human frailties, they are willing to travel down necessary roads, no matter how unexpected the twists and turns.

Leveille has a gift for striking imagery, an ear for dialect and an unsettling way of making the most prosaic choices seem foolhardy and the most outlandish seem reasonable. This is a collection that invites the pleasures of re-reading.

When Sandy Nathan set out to write a book about her profound experience at the Gathering, a Native American spiritual retreat, little did she know it would guide her to chronicle a life of stepping off the edge. Again and again , she takes the risks needed for her soul’s growth and vividly presents her personal journey––one of growing into the courageous spiritual being she is. Sandy reminds us we all possess spiritual greatness: It is our birthright.

By walking with Sandy along her path we get more than a glimpse of a person. We get a revealing and inspiring view of her life. Her adventure and the understanding she adds as she writes help us use her experience to enhance out own development. This book does much more than tell about a life: It takes us by the hand (or sometimes by the nose) and leads us to the opportunity afforded by spiritual practice. And practice is the key word.

In this fascinating narrative you will encounter the basics of prayer, meditation, worship, spiritual retreat, and how a life can become dedicated to the pursuit of experiencing the divine. You will even find how to domesticate your mind and make it an ally in your quest for inner knowledge.

It is said that the path to self-awareness is a solitary one. Stepping off the Edge opens you to the possibility that it can be fun, challenging and rewarding.

One Reader Feedback is:

David Snape saves!!! He may save teeth, money, time, and pain, but most importantly, he may save lives. Now that links have been established between the infection of chronic periodontal disease and many systemic illnesses like Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke and Low-weight pre-term birth his words are invaluable! Dave’s new guide, “WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GUM DISEASE” is a great layman’s handbook about how to care for your teeth and gums.

He has thoroughly researched gum disease and has written an easy to read guide for people to help themselves, yet gives balance to the need for professional care. This book is a must read for people who are afraid to go to the dentist, people in underserved areas or those who just can’t afford professional dental services. Dave makes the reader aware of the signs of gum disease and what they can do to help themselves.

This book should be in dentist and doctor’s office waiting areas and health clinics for the poor and working poor. He is respectful to the importance of Dentists and Hygienists in their role in helping people achieve good oral and systemic health, but also helps inform the public how to be better patients! Definitely a valuable book to have handy on everyone’s bookshelf!

Sporadic Memories

  • ISBN-13: 978-1897512111
  • Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 5.5 x 0.5 inches
  • Price: $16.95

Description

‘Sporadic Memories’ is a novel about a lifestyle that needs to be read about. Within the first few pages you will realize there has been a loss, it is not sad though. The narrator expresses with great enthusiasm the life they lived, which makes it nice during times when it becomes difficult. By the first few pages I hope you can tell that the narrator has been alive a long time, explaining the way it is written.

There is no distinction between the characters genders.

The Part that remembers the time they gave bracelets to one another, brings about another way of coming together…following how their courtship developed and the apple tree that is depicted throughout the novel using it’s fruit. It gets sad for a bit after this, but notice that it gets sad because there is so much more to why the one lost is worth writing about.

It is partly a love story. You know for sure it is when you get to the part about the piano played and music written, you should at least read to the first song.
The memory at the exhibition and recalling times in the rain and snow is next. They travelled a lot together and you will read of a place if you read a little after the description of the surrounding of their home.

If you read to the first birthday mentioned, you will find a recipe worth trying, a poem worth reading, and fireworks. The narrator is a playwright, so there is a play that is broken down throughout the novel…it is a difficult read, but it is important in showing how the two brought their work together, and what differences they made.

Things are repeated to show how important positive repetition is, showing how to move on while remembering especially the passion. This novel is full of passion carried through the love they had for each other, their work, and friends…you might want to read at least until you hear about their friends.

This novel completes the story as the pages go on, putting certain pages together will bring the memories in order.

It is an easy read.

It Is written poetically which gives it justice. It begins the way it ends…
Sporadic Memories is a novel about a life that needs to be read.

Description

A modern Madame Bovary, a seductive wise woman and the eternal question – is the god of Love dead? We have the choice to approach betrayal, love and the illuminations from suffering with the perspective similar to what Newtonian physics provide when we examine nature or, we can expand the radius and inspect these under the microscope of quantum and the telescope of astrophysics. Neither perspective is wrong. But, if you are like me, you’ll find the latter much more elegant! Helena is an ordinary modern woman whose circumstances guide her into extreme choices. Frivolity, more or less, is an aspect of Time and we all indulge in it. But let us not dwell on Helena’s misdemeanours. I urge you, instead, to explore Diotima. Her name is not entirely obscure. Socrates claims she taught him everything he knows about love. Deity and mortal, faced with circumstance Diotima imposes clarity, discipline and a stunning, elegant order against appearances with tenets beyond our normal and rather susceptible, narrow-scope consciousness.

Someday, she must wake up to reality, though Ellie no longer has any idea what reality is. She only knows that Robert must play an important part in her future. He longs for one simple favor to be completed with his death, for each of his heirs to await the return of his long lost lady love. Desperate to appease the dying man, the grandson agrees to await the return of the Raven’s Lady. Despite the passage of centuries, each Earl of Ravensmoor assigns the quest to each of his heirs.
Dante Burroughs, despite his disbelief and scorn toward the task, has carried on the family quest into the present. Unfortunately, he suffers from one slight quirk which his own ancestors have failed to divulge. He has been, for the majority of his life, plagued by vivid dreams of his great grandsire’s love. Despite every desperate attempt that he has made to go on with his own life, the nightly dreams have become more intense, more haunting with every passing year. Dante feels as if he has been cursed, forever tormented by the images of a woman who seduces his every dream, the whispery softness of her image tormenting his waking hours. Dante has began to sense that she is a woman he knows he will never encounter.
On a business trip to Phoenix, Arizona, Dante encounters the vision of his ancestor’s lady in his own offices. The drama begins when he desperately wishes to bring Kathleen Bennett into his life, despite the fact that he is a lord of the realm and she refers to herself as ‘just his secretary’. Dante is tortured by the love he feels for the woman of his dreams, but tormented at the same time by the thought that she does not seem to understand the unspoken bond in which they share.

Compared to authors such as Roger Zelazny and Harlan Ellison, Banks takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotion with stories ranging from the sweet tale of a boy who simply wants to be “Touched” by the world in which he is an outcast, to the haunting and lyrical tale of the savior of abused kids known as “The Soul Man.”

The collection also contains the L. Ron Hubbard Writer’s of the Future Contest Quarter-finalist “Kachina Dawn,” about a Hopi man who leaves his village to find his purpose in life, but returns with a terrifying secret that could destroy his world. In addition there is the Writer’s of the Future Contest Semi-finalist “Avatar,” about a disabled man who seeks to escape his frail body, but learns that one’s Fate is much harder to elude.

Author Gregory Bernard Banks combines the colorful storytelling style of the “Golden Age” of science fiction with the thoughtful exploration of contemporary issues. These stories will take you on an emotional journey through death and life, and leave you contemplating the varied aspects of the human condition.

Having received acclaim from noted authors such as Piers Anthony (author of the Xanth series and many others), and Carole McDonnell (author of Wind Follower), Phoenix Tales: Stories of Death & Life, Second Edition, promises to be one of the most exciting releases of 2008.

What caused her to take her life? Why did she marry a man she barely knew, giving him a claim to the family home? Why did Lilian feel compelled to keep her marriage a secret?

Burdened by a secret of his own, McKay dares to stay in Harlem to stave off the threat to his family home and answer questions about Lilian’s death. He rediscovers the world of the Harlem Renaissance, a place of suffocating class strictures, seductive patrons, and aristocratic civil rights leaders. His inquiry takes him from the wealthy salons of Renaissance Harlem to the crowded tenements of its poor. He uncovers old loves and festering hatreds.

The deeper he probes, the closer he comes to unleashing forces that threaten to reveal his own crippling secret — one that could destroy or redeem him.

This gripping mystery, taut and lyrical, combining elements of the suspense and hard-boiled genres, evokes the mystique of Harlem’s most fascinating era. Absorbing and powerful, Harlem Redux combines incisive comment on race and class with a tragic tale of unrequited love.

Description

Abe Williston loved bush flying in Northwestern Ontario but when he had to fly nineteen Indian children to the residential school in an airplane designed for ten, he was not a happy man. . Now, at the controls of a small airplane owned by Michael Redsky, he was headed back to Kenora, Ontario, returning to close friends he’d left behind as Native culture was being sacrificed on the white man’s altar of bureaucracy. Would there be something to keep him from leaving a second time? The memories of forgotten friendships held no answers.

Jack Redsky, a full-blooded Ojibway Indian had been entrusted with the Native heritage of his forefathers. The coming of the white man brought pressures on his life, which he, and his two oldest sons, Pete and Johnnie, were ill-equipped to cope with.

Diana Corrigan and Jenny Redsky were mothers and friends from different cultures who would be affected by the Canadian government’s Altar & Throne policy of stripping the Native people of their culture.

Susan, a white woman who fell in love with Ignace Two Bears, would prove to be a pillar of support for the Native way of life she saw threatened. Living on the Long Grass Reservation, she watched over Michael Redsky as he grew to manhood. Set in simpler times against the background of Northwestern Ontario’s Lake of the Woods, ALTAR and THRONE explores the friendships between Natives and whites, tested by a world turning more complex as cultures collide.

Mr. Jefferson’s Piano and other Central Harlem Stories

  • ISBN-13: 978-0976755883
  • Product Dimensions: 8.8 x 6 x 1 inches
  • Price: $18.97

Description

Based on real life events that took place in city-owned housing during the seventies, eighties and early nineties, my debut novel gives the reader intriguing tidbits of insider information about the world of city-owned property management in Central Harlem over three decades from 1978 to 2001.

Telling the tale through the eyes of fictional character Melba Farris, Mr. Jefferson’s Piano and Other Central Harlem Stories is an anthology that weaves together a rich tapestry 68 short stories, journal entries, agency memos and letters. Melba is a naïve, idealistic, Midwestern who accepts the job of a city real estate manager to help her less fortunate brothers and sisters with their housing woes.

Melba meets the oldest woman in Harlem in the title story Mr. Jefferson’s Piano. 101 year-old, Nora Jefferson and her kid sister, 96-year old Minnie, enchant Melba with the story of how their father acquired the baby grand that sits in the middle their livingroom. The complete piano story is too long to tell here but it involves a ‘loose woman’ that two rival gangsters like and a shootout in a speakeasy when they try to kill each over the woman’s affections.

In three memos, Just sign the bill, Melba argues against paying a contractor’s invoice after his drunken workers seal a tenant’s live kitten into a wall they replaced.

Gimme that Derby, Melba tries to convince pistol packing, 80 year-old Miss Bea to relocate from a vacant building with no services into a better one. They reach a stalemate until Miss Bea admires the stylish gray derby Melba wears.

The devil made me do it, Melba becomes an exorcist when a routine call about a broken stove turns into removing an invisible devil from Ms. Johns’ oven. In Neisha, Melba writes a series of memos to her boss asking for help to improve the hazardous living conditions of 17 year-old Neisha an independent minor, her two young children and a teenage brother, all of whom Neisha is responsible for since her mother died of AIDS.

These tales represent some of the delightfully funny, sometimes perplexing but always fascinating personalities that I met while performing my job duties as city property manager in Central Harlem buildings for over 20 years. The novel also serves as a cautionary tale about the effects urban housing policies can have on tenants and city workers in big city America.

Tension filled her body. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a movement. While turning her head in that direction, Stephanie saw the shape move and then suddenly it towered above her. As the shape rose to its full height, fear filled all the nooks and crannies left in her. Before her this thing stretched out its arms and growled. More than anything she wanted to scream but instead stood frozen. Terror drawing her eyes to look closer, she saw the arms were covered in fur; even the hands were strangely formed and not human. If she could have been more scared she would have. She searched her mind for any knowledge and none came, just a blank place in her mind where memories should be. Staring at the nightmare before her, Stephanie had no words. With no idea what to do, she screamed.

Description

A new Gospel will emerge early in the third millennium. Christ’s message will remain unchanged, but the medium will be different. Three paintings will combine to soften and heal the heart of modern man. Claire Lucas is a young widow and an oil painter of middling ability. Plagued for weeks by a sad dream of Benares, India, she funnels the pivotal image into a work of transcendent majesty. The painting actually radiates heat, requiring a dedicated security guard at the Vetch gallery in Soho, as people yearn to touch it. Viewers are rapt and go away possessed of an overwhelming calm. The painter sells her painting for a life-altering million-five, but suffers a paroxysm of regret and tries to cancel the transaction. She meets and becomes fast allies with the forcefully capable Father Karl Brandt, a priest on the trail of the three foretold masterpieces mentioned in The Angel Scroll, and also Richard Markson, an introverted widower. Someone else wants the paintings enough to kill for them, enough to invade homes in both darkness and daylight. Claire and her champions have quite a bit of ground to make up. The story carries from New York to Jerusalem, Glastonbury Tor to Siena in Italy, with the author conveying aa flair for descriptive detail, and a good sense of when to shift backdrops.

Kill the Messenger: Gemini

  • ISBN-13: 978-1425934309

Description

In Kill the Messenger: Gemini, Gemini is a Heavenly Being and her role on Earth is as a link between Ra and the primitive humans of Earth. She is the messenger and a reminder of the eventual return of Ra. Ra is a being that humans once called the Sun God. The Heavenly Beings have one mission left and that is to save a remnant of humanity. Gemini and Lucifer are the offspring of Ra; however, she is half Nubian and he is half Arian. They have two different destinies in store for the humans of Earth. Gemini wants to save humanity while Lucifer only wants to enslave them to build machines, weapons, and space ships to take him and his kind to other worlds where they can create other slave worlds like Earth. Lucifer is an immortal trapped on Earth changing bodies and lives throughout time.

Kill the Messenger: Gemini takes the reader from the building of the Sphinx to modern times. Gemini knows that it matters what humans believe in the end. Ra went back in time to tilt the Earth in the position it is in today so it would be habitable for the humans he would put there, but the Earth’s axis cannot be controlled forever. While Ra is away fighting off the plague of the Arians in outer space, Gemini is sending out a message to humans who are willing to take ‘the mark’ to be saved from the coming cataclysm and the end of humanity. Humans must make a choice based whether or not they believe the mark is the one written about in the Bible. The Heavenly Beings tried and failed to prevent the total annihilation of humans and the Earth. They are not coming to stop the destruction; they are coming to save a few. The Mayans left behind a message with a clue to the end time. That is the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012.

Description

Playful as well as profound—and as bawdy as he was witty—William Shakespeare is hardly the stuffy, obscure writer who inhabits so many modern classes in English Literature. And yet students often leave the classroom without ever discovering the man behind the marble legend.

In this timely and enlightening collection of Shakespeare’s sonnets, author and poet Jeffrey Caminsky puts some of the fun back in the Bard’s most private and personal set of poems. At once sensitive and tender, yet often skewering mistresses and patrons alike, the poems sing with passion and wit. With explanatory notes to help the modern reader sort through the Elizabethan vocabulary, this collection makes Shakespeare’s poems-and, more importantly, his humanity and sense of fun-come back to life.

Description

I relive the night that changed my life forever…My son, my best friend—shot not once, not twice, but three times as the murderers ran with the only thing that could have kept his body from going into shock—his coat. My life has not been and will never be the same. To lose a child is the worst pain in the world. It’s a pain embedded deep into your heart. A pain that hurts for days, weeks, months and years. I wanted to let go so many times. I couldn’t; the thought of the four little faces I saw on December 29, 1989, reminded me it was not about me. I struggled, I cried, I was hurt, I was angry, I was depressed, I was suicidal, I was losing my faith, but I held on. And today, I want you to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Description

Heartwarming and sad, life is filled with laughter and tears. But for the children everywhere, the painful transition to adulthood is a universal constant.

The son of immigrants living in Hamtramck, Michigan during the Great Depression, Wallace Caminsky grew up knowing hardship and sorrow, as well as joy and love. Part of the “Greatest Generation” during World War II, he saw life and death first-hand. And returning home to start his own family, he experienced the challenges and frustrations of supporting a family in the new and untamed wilderness of Suburbia—where crabgrass and children can both grow, wild and untamed.

In All Fathers Are Giants, Wallace Caminsky draws upon the rich, cultural heritage of the immigrants from Eastern Europe in the early 20th Century. His collection of short stories and poems brings to life a bygone age now largely lost to suburban sprawl and computer games.

Description

Through the ages, man has either sought to understand or destroy God for lack of understanding who God is. Some call the knowledge of God a mystery, that which can only be grasped by great or educated minds.

Today, we have thousands of ancient manuscripts leaving signs, including the bible. There is a myriad of recorded testimony that paints many pictures.

Yet scholars, theologians, and historians of every culture and religion argue as to their meaning and relevance.

You may wonder how, if the professionals cannot agree, you are expected to make sense of it all?

In Make a Joyful Noise: Searching for a Spiritual Path in a Material World, Chariss Walker uses liberal biblical references to explain Spiritual Laws, their relevance in your life, and how to put them to practical use without destroying your current convictions.

Terminology is irrelevant. God wants what you want.

When you understand this, you will Make Your Own Joyful Noise!

Description

In Japan, the line that divides myth from reality is not merely blurred, it is nonexistent. Superstitions, legends, and folk myths are passed down through generations and pervade daily living.

When a child playing near a river fails to return home, it is whispered that she was swept away by an adzuki arai, or Bean Washer. When a man boarding a ship hears the ringing of an unseen insect, it is announced that a funadama (Boat Spirit) is present and so the auspicious harbinger of smooth seas and abundant catch is celebrated. Even something as innocuous as waking up to find your pillow at the foot of your bed is thought to be the trick of a makura gaeshi, otherwise known as a Pillow Turner. Nothing is as simple as it seems. Your neighbor isn’t merely an eccentric old woman—she might very well be a shape-shifting, grudge-harboring Water Sprite.

The Japanese examine life and living with the keenest eyes and the most vivid of imaginations. Thersa Matsuura has captured that essence in this darkly insightful collection, illuminating the place where reality falters and slips into the strange and fantastical.

Description

Tony Johnson is a studious young man planning to soon graduate from much more than high school. Although his zip code places him in a Bronx tenement, his sights are set far beyond the trappings of his humble upbringing. Collegiate dreams combined with falling in love with a white classmate put him strongly at odds with his father. Although his brother C.J. s rebellious ways place him directly in the path of danger on gang ruled streets, and the virginal innocence of their sister Tanya is clearly approaching its demise, it is Tony who incurs the majority of Lionel Johnson’s wrath for the sins of ambition, daring to be with Janet Mitchell, and refusing to bend to his father’s will. Seeing unrealized goals reincarnated in the eyes of his eldest son harshly remind Lionel of what once could have been, and of what went wrong. His own childhood in a segregated southern town established a bitter, prejudiced outlook that is the only legacy he has to pass down to his children. When his job and role as primary breadwinner are lost, Lionel’s authority quickly erodes and he drowns his disappointment one drink at a time. This affords Tony, who lacks the seemingly servile patience of his mother, an opportunity to assert his right to become the man he wants to be rather than allowing his fate to be set by chance and circumstance. But throughout the course of Roy Pickering’s engrossing debut novel, Tony comes to learn that the world is not as black and white as he and his father’s opposing mindsets would suggest.

Description

Raithe looks like a teen but don’t be deceived; as a tour guide on Touraine he’s expert at meeting your requirements, especially if you’re female. His father was a bounty hunter, a hero. His mother is only part human. But Raithe, he’s just a fun-loving, skirt-chasing, easy-going . . . Mindbender.

When Ember spots Raithe in the Mary Rose Tavern she sees a means to destroy her sadistic master. But her plan backfires when Marquesa returns from the dead and captures Raithe, and forces him to use his unique abilities for interstellar thievery. Ember and the Dahle Feyeth travel throughout the Systems in search of Raithe. With the help of an abused and reviled telepath doomed by a primitive inquisition, they will battle Marquesa for Raithe’s life, soul and sanity.”

This book has been likened to the early works of CJ Cherryh, Catherine Asaro, and the Liaden books of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller and described as an engrossing and very readable tale set in an interesting universe, in which the pace never lets up from start to finish.

The search for Raithe challenges the self-perception and personal values of the protagonists and they are not always correct in their beliefs. The powerful Dahle are not what they appear to be, and neither is Raithe.

Description

Rachel and Steven Kade’s two-year-old daughter Danica has been taken by Child Protective Services for what Rachel believes is a mistake. Dani is placed in the care of her Aunt Brooke, Steven’s younger sister. In the beginning of the ordeal, Rachel is panic stricken and desperate to get her daughter back, but Steven has other “priorities,” including smoking pot with his friends, telling anyone who will listen to his conspiracy theories about anything from aliens to the Freemasons, and he and Brooke’s mother who is dying of liver disease in a nursing home after a life of alcoholism.

Brooke attempts to sort through the resentment that she has for her brother while caring for his daughter, but finds it almost impossible to even entertain the idea that the man is even sane and stable enough to be a father in the first place! She soon finds that even Rachel is not as concerned as she first appeared to be in fighting to get her daughter back, as she seems more interested in shopping on her mother’s dollar and forgiving Steven for his courtroom outbursts, outrageous antics, and his desertion as a father and husband.

After his mother’s passing, Steven delves deeper into insanity, and tries to convince Rachel and Brooke of his belief that Danica is the second coming of Christ and that the Freemasons were the ones behind her detainment. Steven believes that if he doesn’t save her they will kill her. Now everyone is headed their separate ways, Steven trying to save Dani from the Freemasons, Brooke trying to protect Dani from her unfit parents, Rachel trying to save her marriage to Steven, meanwhile a shady and deceitful social worker is trying to pull Danica away from everyone she’s ever known by placing her with some hopeful adoptive parents.

In this cautionary tale of the fate of a small child, you will find yourself questioning parental rights, and you’ll be torn between anger, fear, and sympathy for all who are involved. The Fight for Golden Dawn is a story that will give you a new perspective on foster care and parental rights, and just how much the government should or shouldn’t be allowed to intervene in a child’s life.

The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana

  • ISBN-13: 978-0982273418
  • Product Dimensions: 10 x 8 x 0.6 inches
  • Price: $29.95

Description

The Kama Sutra is often thought of as the age old sex position manual. That is a common misconception. Only about 20% of the book concerns sex positions. In reality, The Kama Sutra is a comprehensive way of looking at sexuality. It is about getting to a place where you can maintain a good loving relationship, and where sex is about pleasing each other and knowing how to make each other feel good. As an editor I have tried to find and present to you what I think is an unmodified original translation. I have tried to keep the text as original as I can – including spelling and punctuation. And although the original translation was not illustrated, I have researched and included 18th and19th century Indian sex position illustrations to keep a certain amount of consistency with the writings.

City of Masks

  • ISBN-10: 0473122138
  • ISBN-13: 978-0473122133
  • Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 5.5 x 0.3 inches
  • Price: $10.00

Description

City of Masks is a swashbuckling adventure in a setting reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Italy (complete with twins).

In the city-state of Bonvidaeo, by custom and law everyone must wear a mask and act in character with it, or face civil, social and religious penalties.

Gregorius Bass is sent to Bonvidaeo as the Envoy of Calaria, primarily to get him out from underfoot. Masked as the Innocent Man, and in the company of his radical young Bonvidaoan servant, Bass stumbles into mystery, intrigue, heresy and murder.

It’s speculative fiction (though it’s neither science fiction nor fantasy). It’s a mystery (with a serial killer) and an adventure (with a sword fight after a rooftop chase). There’s intrigue, some humour and a little romance. Beneath it all, though, is a serious reflective point about identity and social convention. Besides Shakespeare, the strongest influence is probably G.K. Chesterton, though there’s also a little Dumas.
