Book Review – A Grand Ol’ Murder

A Grand Ol’ Murder – St. Paul’s Answer to Inspector Clouseau

Rating: 4 of 5

Author: Brian Landon
Format: Paperback, Kindle

Though he is the world’s most famous actor living in beautiful St. Paul Minnesota, Timothy Chapman still has issues – his daughter is dating a lowlife cretin who crashes Chapman’s party throwing up all over him; if that isn’t bad enough, Chapman’s maid is murdered that same night when she accidentally catches would-be thieves breaking into Chapman’s safe.  Not to worry though, Celebrity detective Doyle Malloy is called into lead the case.  But Malloy, whose work primarily involves television appearances and the occasional watching of Hollywood movies is quickly over his head in this conspiracy.  Will he solve the case or go down with it?

Brian Landon’s A Grand Ol’ Murder is a hilarious murder mystery featuring a detective that is St. Paul Minnesota’s answer to Inspector Clouseau.  Landon takes full advantage of St. Paul and Minneapolis’ famous landmarks, citizens, and celebrity visitors who have filmed in the state.  Even Arnold Schwarzenegger makes an appearance!  Landon isn’t too proud to leverage the “Fargo like” quirky style of some of the locals.  While the characters, setting, and language provide the color for this novel, the mystery to be solved is quite engaging as well providing a very satisfying combination.

Readers will quickly become engaged in Landon’s fun, entertaining, and light hearted romp through St. Paul and Minneapolis.  I look forward to detective Malloy’s return in The Case of the Unnecessary Sequel.

  2. Struggling thriller writer Kevin Turner just received a panicked call from his ex-girlfriend Tina, a self-proclaimed clairvoyant prostitute. One of her clients, the mayor’s married son, died in her bed and she needs Kevin’s help to dispose of the body. As if Kevin doesn’t have enough problems. His current girlfriend is the spouse of the gay woman who signs his meager paycheck, his sixth credit card has hit its limit, he received word that his eight-month wait for his second advance check was being withheld by Gotham Publishing until he made the absurd changes in his manuscript that they wanted, and he just discovered his recently deceased father, who Tina claims she’s in contact with, owes ten grand from an internet gambling debt, which Kevin would now have to figure a way to pay. When Kevin discovers Tina’s psychotic brother has chopped up the body, and the police are finding the pieces spread across the suburbs, it sets off a chain of events more bizarre and horrifying than the plot of one of Kevin’s own novels.

The authorities would never believe their story of course, because they’re just kids. Bearing humiliation at school and ramifications at home, they hop a bus and journey to the Grand Canyon where they locate an alien army many thousands of times greater than what Tim had expected. Caught up in escalating danger, Tim and his buds must make a choice. Try to climb back out of the canyon without being seen or take the aliens head on.
