Description

For little fashionistas everywhere. Join in with the sartorial adventures of one snazzy dresser as she discovers that so many clothes are too purpley, too prickly, too fancy, too … ! But, of course, there is something that she loves to wear …and it is just perfect.

Every kid knows that clothes picked out for them by a parent are never quite right. While many picture books focus on “getting dressed,” few touch on the comfort factor, which, for kids, ages 2-8, trumps style, sophistication and even cleanliness.

My 49-word, picture book, Too Purpley! presents a kid’s common complaints about the many physical and visual discomforts of clothing. Simply versed, yet universal in theme, Too Purpley! also hints at a child’s comfort with the familiar – providing a gentle reminder to parents that clothing battles aren’t always worth fighting.

Description

Having just finished college, any grad would’ve been excited to begin a career in the field she majored in, unless of course, she secretly hated it. As was Sandy’s story. She attempts to postpone the inevitable until the end of summer, which backfires. Little did she know that her mother and uncle had other plans for her, plans which she detested almost as much as or even more so than her major. In any event, Sandy endeavors to break away from the family’s traditions and have a fun filled summer without interference. Was that going to happen? Not a chance, unless, if falling prey to a whirlwind of uncomfortable situations filled with rejection, heartbreak and unexpected turn of events is considered fun. Darn if her first free day didn’t come with two favors that ultimately change her life.

Description

It seems too good to be true. When Pete McFadden invents his own system of fortune-telling, he doesn’t really expect anyone to take it seriously. He can’t imagine that it will become Hollywood’s next spiritual fad. And he certainly never dreams that “Horokinetics” could make him famous. But it does. And when his creation becomes the battleground between a manipulative cult leader and an unscrupulous corporation, Pete learns a simple truth. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Stunt Road is an intelligent, cynical and above all entertaining foray into the murky world of for-profit spirituality. If you’ve ever raised an eyebrow at self-improvement schemes, corporate marketing mania or the general gullibility of your fellow men, then this book is a treat. Memoir, Mental Illness, Drugs

Description

Carlton Davis, architect and artists writes a no holds bared story of his mental illness, which was undiagnosed for 30 years and landed him in a mental hospital twice. The first time in 1994 he walked out of the facility without permission because the hospital refused to treat a medical condition. He was returned after a visit to the emergency room of the local medical hospital. The mental hospital wanted to incarcerate him as crazy against his will. He refused and threatened to sue the institution. In the end he stayed to complete a 28-day program for alcohol and drug abuse. This trip to the mental hospital for addiction failed to cure him of the disease.

Mr. Davis, spent eight more years trying to end his addiction which included a trip to the Betty Ford Clinic in Palm Springs before he once again found himself in the same mental hospital after a suicide attempt. Voluntarily committing himself to the facility. Davis was immediately placed on involuntary hold against his will because the doctors stated he threatened his wife and doctor. It took Davis seventy two hours undo this hold and get himself placed in a unlocked part of the hospital, and another week before he was even able to get psychiatric help.

As he recounts in his book, Mr. Davis believed his life long troubles with drugs, instability, depression, rage, and periods of supreme exhilaration were caused by a childhood which included kipnapping and sexual abuse.

Davis finally received help and a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, which changed his life. Finally given proper medication for manic-depression, he no longer desired illegal drugs, or had suicidal tendencies.

Taken together, the tales of “Strange Times” make a powerful introduction to a bold new voice in modern fiction.

Description

As one of the first post-WWII Baby Boomers, Jim Chambers’ childhood and early teenage years were in the 1950s, a remarkable decade for the United States that saw enormous political, technological, and cultural changes. Although many books have covered the headline-making events of the era in great detail, few of these books give the reader a real feel for what daily life was like for Americans living in that decade, especially for kids growing up then. The author remembers the little nuts and bolts things of daily life for families during the fascinating decade known as the Fabulous Fifties. “Recollections” perfectly blends paying homage to the little day-to-day rituals with a larger scale examination of social issues and mores of the times, and it’s equally entertaining on either level. “Recollections” is a warm, lovingly honest, and fascinating portrait of America in the mid-20th Century.

Carbuncle’s latest offering, Grundish and Askew, ponders these troubling questions and more.

Description

“Jacob’s Courage” is a tender coming of age love story of two young adults living in Salzburg at the time when the Nazi war machine enters Austria. This historical novel presents accurate scenes and situations of Jews in ghettos and concentration camps, with particular attention to Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. It explores the dazzling beauty of passionate love and enduring bravery in a lurid world where the innocent are brutally murdered. From desperate despair, to unforgettable moments of chaste beauty, Jacob’s Courage examines a constellation of emotions during a time of incomprehensible brutality.

Called, “gut wrenching” and “heart rending,” this coming-of-age love story allows the reader to comprehend the terror experienced by Holocaust victims on a personal level. Yet, it also reveals the triumphant spirit of humankind and demonstrates how ordinary people can perform extraordinary acts of courage when the lives of loved ones are in danger.

A film company has expressed interest in the movie rights and Jaocb’s Courage has been reviewed extensively, including by Jewish Book World and by the Association of Jewish Libraries. This book resides at many international Holocaust Museums, including Yad Vashem, The US Holocaust Museum, the Toledo Holocaust Museum, the Illinois Holocaust Museum and a Holocaust museum in Poland.

The fourth fall of mankind is well underway. The Order of Eden seems to be the only force for order and peace, offering a place in their new society in trade for a large cash investment and their freedom. Captain Valance and the Triton crew are finally working as a unit. Oblivious to the grand designs of the Order of Eden, they will be drawn into the center of a galactic conflict over a planet with a secret that’s been buried for decades. The question put to them is not if they can prevail, but if they can survive. Frontline takes the Spinward Fringe series to an epic scale without leaving what makes Space Opera great behind. Frontline has the drama, grit, characterization and humor we’ve come to expect from Randolph Lalonde.

Description

Forewarned by his mother to pick his friends carefully, Richard finds himself dangling from a rock and about to drop into the Gulf of Mexico when his chosen pal drives his car off the Galveston seawall. Convicted of road rage forty years later, this is but one of the many stories he tells the constantly changing cast of court-appointed psychologists and therapists he winds up going through before it’s all said and done. Growing up with two brothers and a sister was no picnic back in the fifties. So what if oldest brother John was a natural athlete and a bona fide genius?
Take away his speed reading skills and the photographic memory and he was just another jock. Middle brother Harry, on the other hand, was the no account rat of the family and a veritable thorn in Richard’s side. As for his on-again, off-again younger sister, who knew where she stood? If Judy idolized him like he thought she did, why was she always squealing on him? And could his mother’s twisted bedtime stories be the root of Richard’s problems?

Description

This is the true story of a father reunited with his young son. He discovers, over time, that the boy’s mind is fractured into more than 400 multiple personalities that protect his secrets. The family’s lives are threatened when they discover he is also possessed by demons that seek to destroy them. The boy’s mother offered her son up to a satanic cult and to abuses so horrific that they seem more like fiction than reality. How does this happen to a God-fearing family, and how do they deal with what is revealed to them? A young boy’s secrets could destroy this family, or, at the very least, bring it to its knees.

When the O’Neal family is threatened by mysterious forces, cultic rituals, and a labyrinth of obstacles, they find out how far they will go and how hard they will fight to save one of their own and themselves in the ultimate, real life battle of good verses evil.

Description

A woman’s struggle as she searches for her missing husband leads to shocking revelations about him, his family, and the crime of adult kidnapping.

Abby meets Caiden when she is sixteen years old and knows she has met her soul mate. At nineteen Abby marries the love of her life and together they begin a family of their own. Life gives them a gift, but this gift is short lived. After seven years of marriage it ends.

>Abby is left alone with her two children and the bloody clothes that Caiden was last seen in. With the horrifying revelations from her mother in law Abby sets out to prove her husband is indeed alive and that he’s been taken against his will by his mother, brothers, and sisters in a sick and twisted game of keep-away.

Knowing her husband isn’t dead, Abby, with the help and support of her family, begins a search that takes her from Arizona to Arkansas and lasts for a span of eight years.

On a visit to Caiden’s birthplace, Abby and her brother Chase meet with Caiden’s best friend who fills them in with the secrets of her husband’s childhood and of the hell he endured. He tells them of the nightmares, the deceit, and the abuse Caiden suffered at the hands of his family.

More determined than ever to locate her husband, before his family kills him, Abby hires a private investigator who opens the doors to Caiden’s private world of hell and exposes his family for what they are, but will he be on time? Will Abby be on time to save her soul mate? Can she make him want to fight one last time?

River of Tears is a tale of personal triumph over heartbreak, of unconditional love and bravery. It is a compelling modern-day story depicting how the power of love can overcome even the darkest facets of human nature. The story demonstrates how self-determination and loyalty can lead to unimaginable accomplishment, regardless of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. It is a story of faith in the face of tremendous loss, where fear and discouragement threaten to steal the last glimmer of hope. Will this shred of hope be enough to sustain, or will it ultimately crush Abby’s dreams of lasting happiness?

River of Tears will take you on a journey you will never forget, it will make you want to gather all you love close and keep them there, because we never know what’s around the next corner of our lives.

Description

The Accused Madam is founded by Vicky Gallas and offers the European liberal perspective on adult business prosecutions and legal pursuits in the US. Daily topics frequently involve commentary on political agendas and current news specific to government, law, and adult business. This blog is, avowedly, a view from the left and in the voice of a defendant that was pursued relentlessly by those with a political agenda.

Vicky Gallas owned escort services in Orlando, Florida for a decade when she was prosecuted on organized crime charges and subsequently acquitted by a jury of her peers.

Description

Vicky Gallas opened her Orlando-based escort service in 1992. Beginning in 1994, she became the subject of years of law enforcement-induced intimidation and publicized misinformation. In this honest and shocking story never before told, we learn about the hypocrisy that permeates a legal system in which business owners can be prosecuted by the very individuals who benefit from their services. In Memoirs of an Accused Madam: The War on Adult Business in Orlando, former escort service proprietor Gallas offers a revealing view into the workings of escort services and the extremes a community’s “morality police” will go to shut their doors and imprison their owners. This memoir is not intended as a defense of escort services. Rather, it is a straightforward and carefully documented overview of the fundamental flaws in the U.S. criminal justice system and how one woman stood up to state RICO charges to become the only escort service owner in the U.S. to be found not guilty.

When I left McKarey’s Bluff ten years ago, I never planned to return. Ariel Morgan had refused to marry me and there was nothing left to stay for. Now Ariel is dead, supposedly by her own hand, and her younger sister, Rachel, is spiraling toward that same fate. Rachel used to be in love with me, maybe even more than Ariel. But she was a kid then. Now I’m returning to save a woman. And McKarey’s Bluff is a small town haunted by more than Ariel’s death. Years ago fifteen prostitutes disappeared. Sometimes the ghosts come back, not that I believe in them. But something isn’t right here, and I’m seeing things I can’t explain. I came to save Rachel, but I’m not even sure I can save myself anymore.

Description

Every couple of days, sometimes more often, I will post a review on a Kindle book, novella, or short story. Quite often, these will be ‘Indie’ books. Readers will hopefully discover many works they have not known existed.

My posts will include Reviews, additional commentary, conversations with authors, and Honorable Mentions.

I review many different genres, but do tend to stay in fiction and away from romance.
——————————————

My reviews use the Five Star Rating System that Amazon allows.

5 Stars: Outstanding Book that I recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre
4 Stars: Very Good Book that I recommend highly
3 Stars: Good Book with some issues/problems that I recommend with only slight hesitation.
2 Stars: Poor Book with some redeeming qualities
1 Star: Very Poor Book

My reviews have the following categories:

Plot/Storyline
Character Development
Writing Style
Editing/Formatting

Rating: I give the work a movie-style rating and list why. Example: R for Violence.

Description

Shawn Kleiner has it all: money, fame, a skyrocketing career as an international musical phenomenon, his beautiful girlfriend Amy, and all the women he wants– until the night Amy has enough and leaves him stranded in a Scottish castle tower.

He wakes up to find himself mistaken for Niall Campbell, medieval Highland warrior. Soon after, he is sent shimmying down a wind-torn castle wall into a dangerous cross country trek with Niall’s tempting, but knife-wielding fiancee. They are pursued by English soldiers and a Scottish traitor who want Niall dead.

Thrown forward in time, Niall learns history’s horrifying account of his own death, and of the Scots’ slaughter at Bannockburn. Undaunted, he navigates the roiled waters of Shawn’s life– pregnant girlfriend, amorous fans, enemies, and gambling debts— seeking a way to leap back across time to save his people, especially his beloved Allene. His growing fondness for Shawn’s life brings him face to face with his own weakness and teaches him the true meaning of faith.

Blue Bells of Scotland is both a historical adventure and a tale of redemption that will be remembered long after the last page has been turned.

Description

It’s 1990, the Berlin Wall’s fallen and American slacker Gordy Ford arrives in Munich with barely a roof over his head. Hoping to impress Jane, a hip older German, Gordy carries on a half-baked charade that he’s a top Fulbright scholar. Soon Gordy and his long-lost expat pal Tad stumble onto a historical discovery that seems to invoke the wrath of a shady Neo-Nazi wannabe, Hugo, not to mention the recently liberated Russian mafia. But what are they all really after? Each carry secrets and will have to come clean — even when the truth wreaks havoc on guarded love and brittle dreams.

Besserwisser (German for “upstart know-it-alls”) offers dark humor, a rowdy plot and imposters exposed despite their best efforts. It also comes from the heart, since I once was (really was) a Fulbright Research Fellow in Munich.
