When 21-year old Connie moves to Whitehorse in the summer of 1978, she’s what the locals call a Cheechako – a green-horned tender-footed tourist. And Connie couldn’t agree more. Amongst the hippies looking for a new frontier, the miners, loggers, and contractors looking for a fast buck, and the trappers content never to see another human face, she feels like a Cheechako – like she picked the worst possible lace to escape the suburban vacuum of her teenage years. Connie’s fears are confirmed when she stabs Dale her first day in town, after interrupting a domestic dispute.
As Connie evades Dale in Dawson, Whitehorse, and the wilds of Ashcan Lake, she forms a friendship with a trapper named Rowan, learns to stand on her own two feet, live off the land, and even mush a team of sled dogs.
But when Dale shows up looking for revenge, Connie’s escape becomes a nightmare, and the only thing that stands between a friend and death is Connie’s questionable ability to navigate seven dogs through an unforgiving Yukon winter.

Before September Falls

  • ISBN-10: 0615191290
  • ISBN-13: 978-0615191294
  • Product Dimensions: 8.8 x 6 x 0.5 inches
  • Price: $14.95

Description

“Before September Falls” by Jesse Lee is the story of a young man’s adventures the summer after he graduates from high school before he attends college. He struggles with family issues and slowly begins to realize the responsibilities that now face him. The novel does contain sex, alcohol and drug use, but in a way that is honest and thought provoking.

” The sun’s already high when I finally get home from the airport. My cheeks sting with dry tears and my contacts hurt from the sun, despite my sunglasses. I turn off the engine and sit, finishing my cigarette, unsure of what to do next. The summer I’ve waited so long for is now ending and in just a week I’ll be starting college.

I sit in quiet reflection, yearning to remember all the details of the events that have20recently expired. I long to have Tawny next to me, laughing her big laugh, teasing me the way she always does. I knew from the moment I left the airport I would never have her in my life the way she’s always been. We’ve spent nearly every day for the past two years together, inseparable, but I no longer have the security of that controlled environment. The reality of the world around me started to haunt me as I drove those busy freeways home, alone.

I slowly step out and breathe in the warm air, flicking my cigarette butt. The sky’s clear and the air’s perfectly still. The wind has finally ceased and the stillness is saddening. I make my way towards the stairs that lead up to my apartment. I walk the steps in the shade and feel the hint of a chill that’s not too far away. The chill that signals the end of summer and the end of all the smells that will now be forever different. My knees will start to ache soon and all summers to follow will never be the same. No more lazy days in the sun, no more late nights without care. No more ’summer breaks’ or virginity to lose.”

Description

By 19 authors in the Amazon Shorts Program. The anthology consists of 19 adult fiction stories by 19 authors, many of them published novelists. The stories run the gamut of fiction, from romance to horror, from suspense to sci-fi and fantasy.
Imagine, if you will, a building of unknown origin.A building in which there are many rooms, each with a window that looks out upon a courtyard and a scene beyond.

In each room a person sits, staring out the window at the same people and objects that everyone else sees from their windows. Yet, as we tell our stories of what we see, we learn a basic truth of the universe. We learn that even though our eyes survey identical scenes, our minds take us to places that only we as individuals know and remind us of stories that only we can tell.

Outside the window we see a winding country lane leading into the distant countryside. We see two boys, perhaps 10 or 12 years old, tossing a baseball to each other. A girl of maybe 7 or 8 swings on a schoolyard swing set, while two lovers walk hand in hand along the side of the road. A ramshackle old mailbox sits on a slanted post, and nearby there is an old car, possibly from the ‘50s – appearing to be in good running condition. We see a church steeple and an older woman walking along the side of the road, seemingly headed for the church. A young soldier stands still, his face is pensive, and it is plain to see that he has much on his mind. Two men are in a heated discussion about something, but from inside our window we can only guess at what is causing their turmoil. Nearby a beautiful girl sits on a park bench, weeping. An old dog lies on the grass, peaceful and serene, watching a puppy frolicking through a flower bed. As day changes to evening and then to night, we see a twinkle in the sky. A falling star, perhaps a starship?

Yes, the characters are there for us, waiting, making no comments that will give us any clue as to who they are or what they may be doing. They are waiting for us to cast them in their roles, to give them direction. We can use one or all of them. We can make them walk down the country lane, drive the car, or follow along behind the woman as she heads for the church. It is our world to create, and we have total control of everything in it. Whatever happens, we make it happen. Loves, lies, war or peace, death or life, shackled to earth or bound for the stars, it is in our hands to decide their fate.

We sit at the window, taking in the complexity of the scene before us and after a few hours of pondering, we sit back and relax as we use our mind’s eye to peer into a world that we will shape into anything we wish it to be.

Slowly, we begin. We pick up our pens and write our stories of the world outside the window.

  1. Just finished tagging March 09 also.

  2. Todd,
I just opened my E-mail and had a review on my book ‘Evil Moon.’ I thought this odd, as no one had read it yet to my knowledge. I read what this gentleman had written with growing dismay. I had attempted in my marketing efforts to join and post a back cover blurb on the book with the Amazon discussions Horror thread. Unfortunately, there was some kind of problem ad it posted about six times.
As soon as I was made aware of this, I went and posted an apology, it seems to no avail. I am including what this ‘Gentleman author’ had to say in case he is here on TMBOA. If so, I wanted you and others to be aware of him.

Wow. I was going to buy this book. Honestly. Until, of course, i saw YOUR review. And something went off in my head….where had i seen “Lycan” before? Oh, yes, over on the Horror thread trying to hawk your novel by posting the “blurb” as you call it from the back cover multiple times. Mr. Ray, you are ridiculous. Obviously if your book had been worth reading, with its “three dimensional characters” and syringe like scenes of horror and whatnot, then a credible publisher obviously would have given it a chance. It’ s sad that you review your own book as if you are some reader whose breath has been stolen by a horrifying novel. And no matter what your reply is to me, no matter how insulting your retort may seem, i can rest easy with the fact that i haven’t stooped this low. Don’t worry, i…

  3. Hi everyone,
I’m not trying to cause anyone any grief, but I have a question. I’ve noticed a couple of books, which shall go unnamed, that have covers I would think are copyrighted images. My question is did the authors purchase rights to use them? If so, how do you go about that and how much do you have to pay for using them?
I have another book I’m working on and have found several images I’d like to use, but don’t know if I would have a problem for doing so. Could someone answer these questions for me? I mean I don’t even know how to track down the people or companies that might have the rights. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
    Regards,
    lycan

  4. Hey everyone,
Is anyone having trouble trying to tag today? I’m working on tagging March 2009. I’m halfway down the page and have been unable to tag any of them. The tags seem to have just disappeared!
