Carlton Davis, architect and artists writes a no holds bared story of his mental illness, which was undiagnosed for 30 years and landed him in a mental hospital twice. The first time in 1994 he walked out of the facility without permission because the hospital refused to treat a medical condition. He was returned after a visit to the emergency room of the local medical hospital. The mental hospital wanted to incarcerate him as crazy against his will. He refused and threatened to sue the institution. In the end he stayed to complete a 28-day program for alcohol and drug abuse. This trip to the mental hospital for addiction failed to cure him of the disease.
Mr. Davis, spent eight more years trying to end his addiction which included a trip to the Betty Ford Clinic in Palm Springs before he once again found himself in the same mental hospital after a suicide attempt. Voluntarily committing himself to the facility. Davis was immediately placed on involuntary hold against his will because the doctors stated he threatened his wife and doctor. It took Davis seventy two hours undo this hold and get himself placed in a unlocked part of the hospital, and another week before he was even able to get psychiatric help.
As he recounts in his book, Mr. Davis believed his life long troubles with drugs, instability, depression, rage, and periods of supreme exhilaration were caused by a childhood which included kipnapping and sexual abuse.
Davis finally received help and a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, which changed his life. Finally given proper medication for manic-depression, he no longer desired illegal drugs, or had suicidal tendencies.
